Sheesh… another Togashi ‘trope’ to add to the list.

Dude loves his tournaments. We all know that. He’ll devote countless amounts of screen time to showing us every single one of their brackets.

However, even Togashi know his limits, apparently. You’ll recall that we got pretty much this same twist towards the end of the “Three Kings” arc of YU YU HAKUSHO. It seemed like we, the viewers, were about to get the same… comprehensive treatment that we’d received during the “Dark Tournament.” Yusuke had raged through a ton of opponents, and he was about to have another protracted climactic duel with one of his arch foes.

…but then he was knocked out, and the rest of the tournament’s results were summarized to him when he woke up, after the fact. Sound familiar?

I’m not criticizing the man for falling back on this kind of storytelling trick. Far from it. Believe me, I’d much rather get the cliff notes now that these Hunter trials have been going on for so long. But… it’s still fun to point out.

Definitely didn’t see this surprise about Pinhead coming. I dug how the show finally shows that there’s some real vulnerability lurking inside of Killua’s too-cool-for-school façade. And it was rather amusing how his big brother winds up serving as the personification of all his inner doubts - - voicing fears of acceptance and self-worth (semi) organically.

I do kind of question why Killua didn’t just shred the dude to pieces. Yeah yeah… I get that he holds psychological power over him, and we need to give our hero a real weakness, and the older assassin should logically be tougher than the younger assassin. But still… it almost seems jarring.

atch this episode, “Baffling Turn × Of × Events" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

I think it was at this point where I started noticing how badly Naruto got these guys for all of their ideas. Chunin exam, genocided clan with magic eyes, dude who hates his brother and wants to kill him... then eventually someone develops lightning powers and I just facepalmed like, "this is beyond trope and homage at this point."

Good episode. I enjoyed the series prior to this but here is where it really kicked into high gear and I knew it'd be something to add to my weekly rotation.

No wonder HxH was on hiatus for so long. It's like someone is always lurking to steel the story.
