Anime Vice: WEIGHT to WATCH

One of the things that I've often felt that lacked from Anime Vice is a level of personality. Not from the users, but from those behind the scenes that run it. We lost a lot of that back when the original staff left. Not that I'm saying Tom does a bad job at all. He just so rarely posts any videos anymore. One of the reasons I think Giant Bomb always does so well is because they are the largest video producer. Each has so much personality and you get to know the people. I've really wanted to try and so something for Anime Vice, but I'm limited in two areas. I don't have a video camera, and I'm not actually staff. This is the introductory blog for a project that I wanted to submit to Ethan a few months back, but never imagine the site's split was in the cards.

What follows is going to be a four week project based on an old blog I wrote called "The Anime Workout". Now, at the heart of many of my hobbies is the scientific method. Something in me loves to experiment. I might read about certain theories and I want to try them out. Providing serious bodily harm can be avoided.....most of the time. My favorite test subject just so happens to be my own body. I like to try out exercises, recipes, and other assorted techniques that promise self improvement. Not the "cock and bull" infomercial type of programs or gadgets. This is about an exercise program you can do while watching anime. I'm going to show you that anime can help you lose weight.

The Program

This was inspired by the Free Step game on my Nintendo Wii Fit. In this option, you use the Wii Fit Balance Board as a stepping board and you can change the channel on your TV to watch something else. The Wii Mote you hold in your hand keeps track of your progress and tells you when it's time to stop. I found myself most of the time watching anime. There's something about watching a show you enjoy while doing this simple exercise that's very effective. You don't need the Wii Fit Board specifically. Just a basic aerobic step or walk in place would work fine. When most of your anime online, without commercials, can be 22-25 minutes at a time. Walking to two episodes is basically forty minutes of exercise. The faster you walk. The more effective the workout will be.

This is a really effective exercise for watching anime, because it doesn't require you to really look away from your screen for any real length of time. Even just watching an episode a day can be effective.

What You Need

  • Stepping Board: While not 100% needed, the board just makes your exercise a little more tolerable since walking in place can just feel more tedious.
  • Computer or TV/DVD: Face it, you'll need one or both of these if you're going to watch anime on.
  • Anime to Watch: There are a ton of streaming websites out there that host anime legally. That leaves you with a wide library of shows to watch while you exercise.
  • Bottle Water: It's just a good idea to stay hydrated during a work out. It's best to keep some water nearby. Glass or refillable bottle.

Stretching

Something my football coach taunt me in school was the importance of stretching before a workout. In fact. stretching before and after can be a good way to avoid your muscles going stiff.

Holo may be a deity, but she also knows the importance of stretching for exercise. I think I'll also be using these stretches. At least those that I can do.

--

Resting

An important tip is that for every hour of exercise you will need to take a ten to fifteen minute break to avoid over exerting your joints.

The Big News

Now, here's where the personality comes in. I'm going to be living by this program every day for the next month. Every Sunday, I'm going to be posting a blog that lists all the anime I watched, time spent exercising, and a record of my weight at the time. I began doing this yesterday. Since I'll be using my Wii Fit for my weight. It will also be recording my Body Mass Index (BMI). All of these will be added to the end of the week article. I'm putting myself out there for your entertainment.

In each article, I'll also be linking to places you can watch the very anime I do.

Weekly Schedule

Here is the weekly schedule I'll be following for the next four weeks.

As an example, here are my day one stats.

(remember that I didn't add in the commercial breaks for the time. I didn't want to stop exercising to have to stop and check the length of every commercial.)

Tips

If you'd like to join in on this project. There are some tips to weighing yourself.

  • Weigh yourself around the same time of day. Your body can fluctuate as much as 1-2 lbs. throughout the day. Find a convenient time to day to weigh yourself. Either first thing in the morning, or before lunch.
  • Select some light weight clothes to wear. Save this for something you wear for when you weigh yourself so the clothes are never a variable.
  • If you like editing the wiki. I would suggest keeping a notepad and pencil nearby. Write down the appearances and concepts as you see them. That could be something you can do for your breaks in between the hours of your exercise.

I hope you enjoy this program I'm beginning to try and bring more personality to the site. Check my blog every Sunday for the results of each week, or follow the Twitter accounts below.

There's a Whole Lot to Learn Now on Anime Vice!!

It was only two weeks ago when I posted a list of the 35 character profiles that I have been formatting to the Anime Vice Wiki Style Guide. I feels that a guide is only as good as the examples that you can show. There were more characters that I wanted to work on. I wanted to finish up the main cast of Highschool of the Dead in time for the DVD/Blu-ray release next month. Alice's page needs a bit more work and I need to handle to dog, Zeke; but the main cast is finished. I hope my work can help to improve and grow Anime Vice.

As with my last format list. While working on character pages, I mostly just concentrated on certain sections. Origin, Creation, Character Evolution, and Other Media. I left Major Story Arcs open because it would take just so much time to fill in those sections by myself. I was going through and editing the pages from two of my favorite Naruto series characters, but I found myself formatting even Sasuke Uchiha's profile. I don't even like Sasuke. After I did that, I felt obligated to do Sakura Haruno and Kakashi Hatake. So, the main cast of Naruto all have been formatted in fine detail.

Check out my latest works:
Shizuka Marikawa
Kohta Hirano
Alice Maresato
Sakura Haruno
Kakashi Hatake
Tenten

Anko Mitarashi
Sasuke Uchiha
Holo
Tia Harribel
Neliel Tu Oderschvank

I haven't looked at my wiki points in a while. It was only last month that I reached 400K points. As of writing this blog post, I cracked 476K. I earned 75,000 wiki points in that time. I'm still learning that I know way too damn much about manga and anime.

Buying Green from FUNimation could get you some Gold

Spice and Wolf Season 1 - Viridian Collection
Spice and Wolf Season 1 - Viridian Collection
Now, if buying a DVD box set of a series with a playful fox spirit that occasionally gets naked and loves apples wasn't tempting enough for you. One particular company now wants to bribe you with a gold coin. Well, I doubt it's really gold, but it is a coin. Seems FUNimation is trying to entice fans of the 2008 Spice and Wolf  anime, and those who might not of already bought the standard DVD box set. With every pre-order of the special Viridian edition box set of season one. They're sending a collector's coin with the lead character Holo printed on one side. There are two catches.

One, the coin only seems to come with purchases made through Rightstuf.com. I checked Amazon.com, but here was no mention of this offer. Two, it's a "while supplies last" kind of deal and series is set for release on December 7th of this year.

A bit of good news is that this offer is retroactive. If you already pre-ordered this set. FUNimation is saying that you will also be getting a coin. Though, it isn't clear if that applies to pre-orders made from retailers other than Rightstuf. It just says, "All customers who have already pre-ordered this collection will automatically receive the coin.".
