One of the things that I've often felt that lacked from Anime Vice is a level of personality. Not from the users, but from those behind the scenes that run it. We lost a lot of that back when the original staff left. Not that I'm saying Tom does a bad job at all. He just so rarely posts any videos anymore. One of the reasons I think Giant Bomb always does so well is because they are the largest video producer. Each has so much personality and you get to know the people. I've really wanted to try and so something for Anime Vice, but I'm limited in two areas. I don't have a video camera, and I'm not actually staff. This is the introductory blog for a project that I wanted to submit to Ethan a few months back, but never imagine the site's split was in the cards.
What follows is going to be a four week project based on an old blog I wrote called "The Anime Workout". Now, at the heart of many of my hobbies is the scientific method. Something in me loves to experiment. I might read about certain theories and I want to try them out. Providing serious bodily harm can be avoided.....most of the time. My favorite test subject just so happens to be my own body. I like to try out exercises, recipes, and other assorted techniques that promise self improvement. Not the "cock and bull" infomercial type of programs or gadgets. This is about an exercise program you can do while watching anime. I'm going to show you that anime can help you lose weight.
This was inspired by the Free Step game on my Nintendo Wii Fit. In this option, you use the Wii Fit Balance Board as a stepping board and you can change the channel on your TV to watch something else. The Wii Mote you hold in your hand keeps track of your progress and tells you when it's time to stop. I found myself most of the time watching anime. There's something about watching a show you enjoy while doing this simple exercise that's very effective. You don't need the Wii Fit Board specifically. Just a basic aerobic step or walk in place would work fine. When most of your anime online, without commercials, can be 22-25 minutes at a time. Walking to two episodes is basically forty minutes of exercise. The faster you walk. The more effective the workout will be.
This is a really effective exercise for watching anime, because it doesn't require you to really look away from your screen for any real length of time. Even just watching an episode a day can be effective.
Something my football coach taunt me in school was the importance of stretching before a workout. In fact. stretching before and after can be a good way to avoid your muscles going stiff.
Holo may be a deity, but she also knows the importance of stretching for exercise. I think I'll also be using these stretches. At least those that I can do.
--
An important tip is that for every hour of exercise you will need to take a ten to fifteen minute break to avoid over exerting your joints.
Now, here's where the personality comes in. I'm going to be living by this program every day for the next month. Every Sunday, I'm going to be posting a blog that lists all the anime I watched, time spent exercising, and a record of my weight at the time. I began doing this yesterday. Since I'll be using my Wii Fit for my weight. It will also be recording my Body Mass Index (BMI). All of these will be added to the end of the week article. I'm putting myself out there for your entertainment.
In each article, I'll also be linking to places you can watch the very anime I do.
Here is the weekly schedule I'll be following for the next four weeks.
| Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Episodes | 1-2 Episodes | 3 Episodes | 1-2 Episodes | 3-4 Episodes | 1-2 Episodes | 2 Episodes |
As an example, here are my day one stats.
Starting Weight/BMI:149.5 lbs. / 24.02
| Day | Anime | Watched at | Time | Total Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apr. 22 | One Piece Ep. 544 Persona 4 Ep. 7 Persona 4 Ep. 8 Highschool of the Dead Ep. 6 | One Piece Official HERE The Anime Network HERE The Anime Network HERE Blu-ray but you can watch HERE | 23:28 min. 25:11 min. 25:12 min. 25:21 min. | 1:39:12 |
(remember that I didn't add in the commercial breaks for the time. I didn't want to stop exercising to have to stop and check the length of every commercial.)
If you'd like to join in on this project. There are some tips to weighing yourself.
I hope you enjoy this program I'm beginning to try and bring more personality to the site. Check my blog every Sunday for the results of each week, or follow the Twitter accounts below.
