Holo

Origin

Holo is a centuries-old wolf harvest deity who used to create good harvests for the village of Pasroe. When the villagers started to become less dependent on her, Holo chose to leave the village and return to her homeland in the north with the traveling merchant, Craft Lawrence. The only problem is that she's been away from her land for so long that she's forgotten where it's located. In return for his assistance, Holo offers her years of wisdom and trickery to assist Lawrence with his trading. Though, their time together may gain in a profit that neither of them expected.

Creation

Spice and Wolf Vol. 1 JPN (light-novel 2006)

Horo is one of the lead character from the original light-novel series Spice and Wolf that was written by Isuna Hasekura with illustrations by Jū Ayakura. The series first began publication in February 10, 2006. The series has been adapted into other media to include a manga and anime adaptation. She is a wolf-deity who can change into a young girl, but her wolf-ears and tail always remain. She's a wise but playful spirit who wishes to return home. She has long brown hair, red eyes. and extraordinary senses of hearing and smell.

Her first appearance was in the light-novel Spice and Wolf Volume 1, her first manga appearance was in Spice and Wolf Volume 1 CH. 1, and her first anime appearance was Spice and Wolf - Episode 1 "Wolf and the Best Clothes". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Ami Koshimizu, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNImation is done by Brina Palencia. She has the ability to change back into a giant wolf after eating wheat or human blood.

Holo's manner of speech is modeled after the oiran (花魁) high-class courtesans. Rather than using the more common バカ (baka) for the word "idiot", she uses the term 戯け (tawake).

Character Evolution

Holo is normally haughty and self-sufficient, but often shows feelings of loneliness as a result of the many years she was left isolated in Pasroe. Her continued traveling with Lawrence brings the two closer together.

Horo takes on the form of a teenage girl when interacting with humans. Only her ears and tail remain visible when she is in human form. Horo can transform into a giant wolf by either eating a piece of grain or feeding on human blood. Her wolf form is massive; she is able to easily tower over all humans. She is very fond of having apples and alcohol and her style of speech is based off high-class oiran courtesans.
