Hisashi Igou, Takashi Komuro, and Rei Miyamoto all run high up to the school's observatory to escape the zombies chasing them and rig together a makeshift barricade. After a brief moment of rest, the chapter continues with a brief flashback of how it all started: Takashi thought about skipping class during a normal school day when a weird man with surprisingly strong arms bit one of the teachers at the front gate. That teacher then caught the disease and began biting other teachers. Soon enough, the disease eventually spreads to more parts of the school, even biting the man who tries to warn the others over the school's PA system. This causes a great panic as the students try to flee, but the majority of them only run into the path of "THEM" as they try to escape.

Hisashi, officially one of "THEM."

Takashi pulls Rei and Higashi out of class and tries to escape, only to run into a zombified teacher. They stab him through the heart and twist his neck around, but he somehow still has the strength to bite Hisashi's arm before Takashi finally bashes his head in.

Back in the present, the barricade has been broken through by the infected students, and the three try running up to the observatory, but Higashi starts coughing up blood as Takashi makes the choice to finish him before he becomes one of "THEM."

ACT 2. Escape from the Dead.....Pg. 075

After having to kill his best friend, Takashi and Rei are still stuck at the observatory of the school. Rei calls her father again, but this time using a secret number that was given to her in case of a emergency. Rei's dad picks up, but doesn't recognizes Rei's voice; he sounded like he was in trouble ,and after, Rei got cut off from the line. The barricade that was made wasn't going to last much longer, Takashi found a water hose and use its devastating water pressure on "THEM," Knocking them down. That's when they decide to leave the building and head back to their homes.

Mean while, more characters are introduced; the first being a ditsy blond nurse name Marikawa Shizuka. She and a student were invaded by a group of zombies. The student tries to protect Marikawa and tells her to run, while he's being attack by "THEM." Due to Marikawa slowness, she doesn't move and ask the student's name. The student was then brought down by "THEM" and the others focus their attention on Marikawa, but she and the student was saved by a kendo welding expert, Busujima Saeko. Busujima, impress by the student's bravery for protecting Marikawa, then ask the student's name, he replies with, "Ishii Kazu." Busujima tells Ishii that he will become on of "THEM" because he was bitten, so she makes the choice by killing him off.

On the other part of the school, we see two other students, one being a self-proclaim genius name Takagi Saya, and the other is a gun otaku name Hirano Kouta. They enter a empty class room and Takagi grabs whatever she and Hirano need to make weapons. The class room is then invaded by a group of zombies, but Hirano kills "THEM" with a modified nailgun.

The group makes their escape.

Takagi and Hirano were defending themselves from more of "THEM" in the hallways. Hirano is then out of nails, and one of "THEM" sneaks up behind Takagi, and out of instinct, she picks up a drill and stabs "THEM" in the head. All of the main characters bump into each other at the same time then kill the rest of the zombies. They all introduce each other and explain their plains about getting out of the premises. They end up in the faculty room looking for Marikawa's car keys, but the size of her car isn't enough to support the group so they decide to take off in one of the buses.

They run off to the parking lot and they meet up with three other students, their numbers then increase to nine. The group finally makes it to the parking lot where they defend themselves from the large number of "THEM" to get to one of the buses. Two of three students that the main characters meet up with get killed, while the others make it to the bus. As the head off, another group of students are seen running away from "THEM," Rei recognizes one of them as Shidou, a heartless person that Rei feels that he's better off dead. Takashi tells Marikawa to stop and save the students. Rei tells Takashi not to save Shidou, but Takashi feels that Rei is being hysterical, and saves Shidou. Rei is angered by the decision and tells Takashi that he will regret what he did.

ACT 3. Spring of the Dead.....Pg. 135

The main characters escape from the school and were heading off into safety. Many of the survivors were not please with Marikawa's driving, she starts to snap at them with her yelling at them about her lack of knowledge of driving a bus. Another student starts having problems with Takashi, stating his dislikes towards Takashi for just looking at him. Rei gets annoyed by the student's attitude, and attacks him in the gut with a broom stick.

Shidou applauds Takashi and Rei's team efforts, but feels that to prevent other fights from happening, he suggest that the group needs a leader. So he recommends himself mainly because he feels the most qualified due to the fact he's a teacher. Shidou becomes the leader of the group with the agreement of the students, but the main characters are left unease.

Rei, refusing to be lead by Shidou, gets off the bus by jumping out. The bus stops and Takashi goes after her to tells her to get back on due to the dangers of the environment. As Takashi and Rei were arguing, another bus that is filled with people being attack by "THEM," crashes into the road that's across the road that the other bus is on. The bus flips over, crashes into other cars, and a huge explosions erupts; a huge gulf of flames is set in between Takashi and Rei, and the bus that's filled with the survivors, which makes Takashi and Rei unable to get back on the bus. So Takashi tells Busujima to meet up with them at the police station at five o' clock (That scene is a clear reference to the beginning of Resident Evil 2).

Takashi and Rei try to escape to the police station, but Takashi is attack by one of the zombies. Though, luckily, it was wearing a helmet which makes it unable to bite Takashi. Rei takes it down by hitting it over its head with a piece of plywood. They find a motorcycle that was owned by the zombie that was just killed, they get on and presume to head off.

The zombie apocalypse has begun! Reviewed by InfiniteGeass on Feb. 5, 2011. InfiniteGeass has written 1 review. His/her last review was for Highschool of the Dead volume 1. 7 out of 7 users recommend his reviews. 7 out of 7 users found this review helpful.
How would you react if a the dead began to rise and started attacking the living? Would you strike down a friend if they were infected? Would you push them off of you as they're being taken by the dead in order to make your escape? This is the kind of question that Highschool of the Dead tries to answer in its first volume.

Written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shoji Sato Highschool of the Dead is set during the present day and in this introductory volume takes place mostly at a high school at the start of a worldwide zombie pandemic. You're are quickly thrown straight into the action at the begining of the first chapter with a flashback later revealing how second year students Takashi Komuro, Rei Miyamoto, and Hisashi Igou end up on the roof of their school. As the story moves along we are later introduced to Shizuka Marikawa, the school nurse, Saeko Busujima, a third year student, along with Kohta Hirano and Saya Takagi who are both second year students.

In this first volume the plot is mostly about trying to get out of the school and see if everyone's families are okay. The story is interesting since not too many manga that I know of have taken on the zombie horror genre and Highschool of the Dead does a good job of showcasing the characters various emotions. When they look angry, sad, or scared you can really feel it by the look on their face. Unfortunately the plot isn't especially deep or meaningful which may turn off some people, but if you like action then you came to the right place.

The main draw of this manga would have to be the action and the very well endowed women that are in it. There is plenty of action happening throughout this volume and it does not pull back the punches when it comes to gore. You wouldn't want something  dealing with zombies not being violent anyway. The action is pretty well done and violent enough that it seems pretty realistic of what would happen in an actual zombie apocalypse, with zombies getting smacked extremely hard in the head by  the various weapons that the main characters use. Anyone who likes their women in their manga to have big breasts will be very satisfied as these high school girls are very sexy looking in that regard and with their curvy bodies.

The art in this manga looks fantastic, even if it doesn't seem to be anything really unique. From the school uniforms to the look from above the school when you can see that most of the town has gone to hell, everything looks really sharp. When a character is shown to have a look of hate or fear, you can really see it in the way their face is drawn.

Highschool of the Dead is for the kind of person who wishes there would be more zombies in their manga and don't really care if it doesn't have a deep meaningful plot to go with it. Anyone who is a fan of zombies and action manga in general should give this first volume of  Highschool of the Dead a try and see what it's all about.
