Possesses the Jagan and is an excellent swordsman. Hiei is one of the characters in the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise.
From a very young age he learned to care for himself, and only himself, but didn't completely close off his emotions as he is still able to care for others. Hiei is known as "Emiko", because he is a male fire demon born to an ice maiden, an all-female race. He was born male because his mother "interacted" with a male demon outside her isolationist Korime community, which led to him being cast out as an infant. After surviving his fall down, he was found and raised by a gang of bandits, but it didn't last long. After realizing the value of the Tear Stone shed by his mother at his birth, he wore the Stone in full view of everyone, hoping to attract enemies to kill. As he grew older, he killed mostly for fun, causing those that survived to greatly fear and reject him.
Later Hiei requested Shigure, the demon surgeon, to implant him with the Jagan eye. This only happened after Hiei succeeded in paying the doctor's asked price, telling him an interesting story. Hiei did when he told Shigure the story of his life up to that point in time, and was warned before of the physical cost of having the Jagan implanted in him. Despite the warnings that the surgery would drain Hiei of all his (former) strength and that it would be incredibly painful, he went through with it anyway. Afterwards, he chose to accept Shigure's lessons in the art of swordsmanship in order to survive. He did so because his original level of power, that of an A-Class demon, was reduced to that of a lower D-Class.
During his stay and training with the demon surgeon, Hiei decides to use his implant for what he originally wanted it for. To find the special jewel that he had lost in a battle with another demon, the very same one created from his mother's tears when he was a baby. He set out on his journey and instead of finding his jewel, Hiei found his way back to the Glacial Village where he was originally born in. Once there, he decided to find his mother, Hina, but would find her friend, Rui, the woman who was forced to cast him off the village and into a river below. From her, he found out that his mother had died years ago, she had committed suicide due to the depression of losing her son and witnessing his "death".
It was also here, from Rui, that Hiei learns of the existence of his twin sister, Yukina, who left the village without explanation a few years before. However, she also told Hiei that it was assumed by herself, and her fellow villagers, that Yukina reasons for leaving were more than likely due to discovering that she had a twin brother, and decided to seek him out. After she finished answering his questions, he simply turned to leave without another word. However, before he did, she quickly realized Hiei's identity as Hina's son, and begs him to kill her then and there for her part in his fate. After appearing to think it over, he refused and continued to walk away.
On his way back to Shigure, Hiei decides from then on to use his Jagan to watch over his sister, rather than finding his jewel. So it was, that upon his final departure from the demon surgeon, he decided to pay Shigure for his services as a swords-teacher. As payment for his teachings, Shigure has Hiei swear an oath to never to tell Yukina that he is her brother. Hiei accepts the terms, and states that he never planned to tell Yukina. After that moment, Hiei traveled everywhere, intent on finding his sister, Yukina. His search eventually took him to the Human Realm, and it was during this time that he first met the human form of Yoko Kurama, Shuichi Minamino. This took him from his quest briefly in the form of planned robbery of the Spirit World's artifact vault. Together with another demon named Gouki, the three stole three dangerous weapons from the Reikai, and became the targets of Yusuke Urameshi's first case.
Hiei changed quite a bit as time progressed.
Hiei is a rather short demon that is indistinguishable from a normal person aside from his artificially implanted third eye in the center of his forehead. However, his is usually covered by a bandage and closed underneath, making it impossible to tell him apart from a normal human by looks alone. He has slightly tan skin and has a toned yet quite lean physique even relative to his short height. At 4' 10" from his introduction, he stands approximate a head shorter than the likes of Kurama or Yusuke who themselves are only average in height. However, later his height is listed a notably taller '5 3". His spiky hair is jet black and stands upright. His usual attire is an ankle length black coat and a white scarf, both of which are usually discarded whenever he faces a powerful opponent, revealing his matching black pants. His shoes are boots which like the majority of his attire are also black. He has a fair face with small features and has no facial hair.
Hiei typically squabbles with Kazuma Kuwabara and keeps a cold and uncaring exterior, but seems to hold a certain amount of respect for all his teammates. He seems to be closer to Yusuke and Kurama. Hiei is grateful for Yusuke's trust in him when Yusuke sends Hiei to rescue the team from the Gate of Betrayal, and he places his faith in Yusuke during the Dark Tournament finals by allowing Yusuke to fight Toguro. Hiei also goes to great lengths to protect Kurama (almost destroying the medical tent during Kurama's match against Touya), and he relies on Kurama to heal him and help in fights (such as the fight against Dr. Ichigaki's Gatasubaru). Hiei prefers to work on his own agenda, and has a notorious reputation in the Demon Realm, but despite this, he is very honorable and always keeps his word. He does not tend to show his emotions, and doesn't always let his teammates know that he cares about them. Hiei can be kind and compassionate, but really doesn't know how to show such things because of where he grew up and the atmosphere there.
Yukina - His younger sister who he cares about deeply that was estranged from him since birth. But he cannot reveal his relationship to her.
Kurama - Arguably Hiei's closest friend. Hiei seems to trust and rely on Kurama above all others even after the latter turned on him once.
Yusuke Urameshi - Hiei's greatest rival but ally at the same time. While initially enemies, Hiei gained much respect for Yusuke after losing to him, even though it was luck.
Kazuma Kuwabara - The member of team Urameshi that Hiei respects the least. However he is not above helping Kuwabara train or fight together with him. He also has a crush on Hiei's little sister which Hiei knows but Kuwabara has no idea that he is Yukina's older brother and Hiei is not willing to tell him.
Shigure - One of Hiei's oldest if not his oldest living acquaintance. He is the one who implanted the Jagan eye into Hiei.
Mukuro - One of the 3 Demon Kings. Hiei served as Mukuro's second in command. There seems to be a mutual attraction for one another but both are highly prideful and tough on the outside and never act on said feelings.
When Yusuke Urameshi acquired 2 of the 3 artifacts that had been taken from the Spirit World, Hiei decided to take action. Yusuke was quick to sense Hiei's presence in the general vicinity, but arrived too late as Hiei had located and kidnapped Keiko Yukimura, the love interest of Yusuke. Yusuke managed to find Hiei in his lair but was met by a mob of humans whose minds had been enslaved by Hiei. Despite defeating the humans without killing them, Yusuke could not help Keiko as she had been cut by the Conjuring Sword, which turns those it cuts into demons after a time.
Botan held back Keiko's transformation with White magic and Yuske took on Hiei. Hiei however was more than a match for Yusuke's strength and dominated the battle, particularly after transforming into his enhanced state. This increased his power and speed and accelerated the rate at which Keiko was being transformed. Rather impressed with Yusuke nonetheless, Hiei opted to transform Yusuke into a demon as well which would serve under him. Cornering the young Spirit Detective, he was about to deal the final blow when his own comrade Kurama stepped in and temporarily blinded Hiei by splashing his own blood onto Hiei's face. This weakened Hiei's hold over Keiko and gave Yusuke the opportunity he needed to attack Hiei. He fired his Spirit Gun attack which actually ended up being dodged by Hiei, but the latter was unlucky as it deflected off a mirror and by luck, struck him, knocking Hiei unconscious. Shortly after, Keiko Yukimura was saved from the Conjuring Blade.
A short time later, Hiei appears before Yusuke and his friends again, this time not as an enemy. He joined Yusuke, Kurama and Kazuma Kuwabara on their short mission to the Demon World to defeat the 4 Saint Beasts, this as a deal cut for him to avoid being incarcerated again. After entering the demon world, they were met by a small army of low level demons, but they bypassed them with relative ease and invaded the headquarters of the 4 Saint Beasts. The group fell into a falling ceiling trap, but combined had the physical strength to hold it up. They designated that Hiei, who was the fastest among them, dash to the deactivation switch. Hiei did so but paused before flipping the switch, leading his new allies to believe that he was leaving them behind, but it was because there was a second trap for the de-activator which only Hiei noticed and after avoid the trap, he turned of the ceiling trap.
They progressed and encountered the first of the Four Saint Beasts Genbu. Kurama stepped forward and swiftly dealt with the Demon. Moving forward, they encountered te next of the Four Saint Beasts Byakko. He was stronger than Genbu and was challenged by Kuwabara. Kuwabara had a much harder time than Kurama did against Byakko ut did manage a victory, knocking Byakko into the magma pit located in the latter's lair. After that, they encountered the third of the 4 Saint beasts and second strongest Seiryu. Genbu who was still alive arrived behind the team of heroes but was actually killed by the annoyed Seiryu. Hiei took him on and despite seeming to have trouble, Seiryu was shocked to find that ice ice powers had minimal effect on Hiei. Hiei finished off the demon with a flurry of slash attack so fast that nobody present could see all of his movements. Finally, Yusuke found and confronted the leader and strongest of the 4 Saint Beasts Suzaku. He nearly died but Yusuke prevailed and the unlikely team of 4 returned to the Human World.
Once back in the Human World, Hiei undertook his lifelong quest of reuniting with his sister after the Spirit World, now allied with Hiei, informed him of his sister's whereabouts. She was being held forcefully by extremely wealthy humans, due to the unique crystals that came from Yukina's eyes whenever she cried. They were harvested for high profit. Hiei departed immediately. Yusuke and Kuwabara also came along and fought the powerful demons involved guarding the way. Hiei made his wy into the grounds and found the man responsible, who's name was Gonzo Tarukane. Hiei savagely beat the man and would have killed him, but his long lost sister who did not know who he was, begged him to stop since the violence was not needed. Hiei heeded her wishes, additionally it would have violated his parole conditions of the Spirit World if he were to kill a human. Yukiana asked Hiei who he was, but Hiei only stated that he was a friend of his allies who had also come.
Hiei meets with Kurama, Yusuke, Kuwabara and a masked 5th ally at Hanging Neck Island where the infamous Dark Tournament was being held. Hiei was particularly pleased to see Yusuke and had a brief skirmish with Yusuke. After going to their room where they were to stay during the duration of the tournament, they were intruded upon by 2 individuals, Zeru and the young Rinku who attempted to intimidate them as they were to be the first opponents that their team (team Urameshi) were to face. Hiei was not impressed however.
First up was Kuwabara vs Rinku. It was a rather close battle, Kuwabara managing to hurt Rinku badly, but ultimately the former simpleness led to his defeat and Rinku secured the first round of their battle. Next was Kurama's battle he faced Roto, who was a coward from the start. He had researched his enemies and discovered Kurama's fake mother in the Human world. Although not truly related, Kurama would not jeopardize the safety of the woman and took heavy punishment from Roto. The only retaliation he did was throw a rock at him. Roto continued to batter Kurama who did not defend himself. Eventually Roto told Kurama to lick his boots but suddenly began to convulse in pain. Kurama explained that he had planted a seed on Roto when he had thrown the rock. The seed which was the seed of the death plant began to grow. With the tide completely turned, Roto begged for mercy, but Kurama ignored his pleas and watched Roto die. With the score now tied, Hiei finally stepped to the stage and his opponent was Zeru, the one who had attempted to harass them earlier. The moment the battle started Zeru unleashed his aura of fire and hurled flames towards Hiei, who's speed allowed him to avoid all the attacks. After noticing that his ranged attacks were not working, Zeru began to heat up his body until he glowed red, then dashed towards Hiei and impaled him, setting him abalze and crashing to the ground below. Zeru turned away in victory but stopped in his tracks when Hiei began speaking. Turning back Zeru beheld a live and well Hiei who was not burned at all by his flames. At that moment, Hiei's Jagan Eye that had been hidden under his bandages awakened and Hiei summoned the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. Zeru was petrified with fear, knowing his own flames were weak in comparison but there was nothing to be done and Hiei blasted him, incinerating him into ash. His arm however could not easily withstand the Darkness flames and was badly singed. Lastly, Yusuke faced the leader, Chu, and narrowly defeated the demon after a very long and brutal fight, but did not kill him and the two gained each other's respect.
After a short period of recuperation, Team Urameshi faced Team Dr. Ichigaki. Hiei himself did not fight in this match. But he and Kurama were ambushed outside of the tournament and while they were stronger than their attackers, they did have trouble given Hiei's injured arm. Yusuke and Kuwabara did all of the fighting, however they discovered that their opponents were being mind controlled by Dr. Ichigaki, the leader of their team. They could not kill them for this reason, but when the masked 5th member of team Urameshi who's identity still had not been revealed stepped in, they undid the mind control with advanced Spiritual techniques. Dr. Ishigaki who himself had no fighting prowess was helpless and Hiei and Kurama ambushed him and killed him.
Next, Team Urameshi faced team Masho. Hiei and the masked fighter were called to a tent on the tournament grounds by a nurse named Ruka. This was in fact a trap and once inside, the two combatants who were arguably the strongest 2 members were trapped inside by a barrier. This left only Yusuke, Kurama and the underdog Kuwabara left in the fight. Kurama went first, defeating his first opponent Gama with some difficulty and being forced to kill him with his rose whip. He proceeds onto the second opponent and wins this one as well but was so worn out by the end that he lost consciousness while standing. The third opponent named Bakken entered the ring and claimed Yusuke could not enter since Kurama was still standing. By this technicality, Bakken as able to enter the ring and face the unconscious Kurama. After abusing Kurama's limp body, he intended to kill him but was stopped at the last second by his own teammate who directed his attention to Yusuke who had posed with his Spirit Gun pointed directly at Bakken. Bakken let Kurama drop and won the round. All the while Hiei patiently stood confined but not for much longer. His Jagan eye had activated again and was slowly weakening the barrier. Yusuke took on Bakken next and while the latter's mist technique was initially troublesome, Yusuke fought around it and beat Bakken within an inch of his life for what he did to Kurama. Yusuke then battles Jin and knocks the latter out but the match was determined a draw since Yusuke was out of the ring for over 10 seconds. The Risho to the surprise of everyone was defeated by Kuwabara and team Urameshi passed the second round of the Dark Tournament.
The semi Final Round was against team Uraotogi. Hiei's desire was to fight all of the rounds, perhaps due to missing the last two matches. Yusuke could not be there for reasons unknown to Hiei at the time. The team rolled dice to determine who got to fight and Hiei won, allowing him to go out first. He was pitted against Makinatro first, who he defeats with incredible ease after removing the latter's arm and murdering him. The second battle was against Momotaro. He was more challenging but Hiei used his sword of the Darkness Flame technique and killed him as well. Kurama took on the third opponent Urashima and killed him after the latter made the mistake of reversing Kurama's age, who was more powerful when he was younger. Kuwabara faced Shishi Wakamaru and lost embarrassingly after getting teleported away from the stage. This left only the masked fighter who's identity to the others had finally been revealed as Genkai, Hiei and Kuwabara's mentor. But the old and powerful woman defeated Shshiwakamaru who stated that were she younger, he might've wanted a woman like her, then he lost consciousness. Genkai finished the Semi-finals for the team after defeating the leader Suzuki.
In the Finals, Hiei faced the mighty Bui. His physical strength was immense but was matched by Hiei. Bui used his special ability, his aura which granted him very powerful defense. To answer this power Hiei finally resorted to the Dragon of the Darkness Flame again, only this time, he had absorbed the dragon and did not suffer injuries. Bui struggled against the mighty technique and by strtching his power and will to the utmost limit, warded off the Dragon, but was so drained that he could not stand up. Hiei uncharacteristically spared Bui, who gained high respect for Hiei. Lastly, Yusuke took on the strongest member in the tournament, younger Toguro. After a tooth nd nail battle, Yusuke unleashed his strongest Spirit Gun. Toguro poured allof his strength into stopping it. He actually succeeded and crushed he attack, but was drained to the point of fatality and died on his feet. The Colosseum began to collapse and Hiei saved his sister Yukina. They went back to the hotel. The following morning they prepared to leave but were met with a wonderful surprise. Genkai who had been killed by Toguro was alive and well thanks to Koenma and everyone left the island.
Hiei was present when Yusuke Urameshi took on Shinobu Sensui. The latter won the skirmish but departed. Hiei and his comrades had a meeting with Koenma who explained to them how dire the situation was. Shinobu Sensui wished to create a gateway that would allow Demons to traverse back and forth between the Makai (Demon World) and Human World. This would be catastrophic for humanity as even one S class demon could cause cataclysmic destruction to the living world. In retrospect, he mentioned that Toguro was only an upper B Class demon with the A and most notably S Class Demons being far more powerful.
Before they made any particular progress on the mission, Genkai had set up a challenge for hem, albeit they didn't know it. They were attacked by Genkai's 3 Psychic pupils. He's sould was captured when he attempted to use violence in Yu Kaito no violence zone. Additionally, Botan's and Kuwabara's were captured, but Kurama outwitted Kaito and won the challenge. It was then that Genkai revealed that they were in no real danger and that her three pupils were their allies.
Later on, Yusuke was being pressured by one of Sensui's lackeys Sniper. Hiei arrived on the scene and proceeded to stab Sniper so quickly the latter couldn't even try and defend. However, Hiei didn't kill him. He was disappointed in Yusuke though given how a low level an opponent like Sniper was giving him a hard time. He told Yusuke to fight him. The two went at it with just their fists and feet. They were evenly matched and Yusuke thanked Hiei for knocking some sense into him. Later on however, when Yusuke finally got to confront Sensui again, he was struck down dead by the powerful man. Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara arrived just in time to see it happen. Infuriated, Hiei attacked Sensui with the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. The later's aura was too powerful to penetrate yet still was able to push him back, back into the portal he had successfully opened to the Makai world. Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara follow the villain inside, bent on revenge.
Sensui even noted that in their fury, Hiei and Kurama had ascended from B Class Demons to A Class Demons, however the 3 of them combined were no match for his own S Class level power. This was no exaggeration as no matter how hard they tried, they failed to inflict any harm upon Sensui, while the latter took his time about beating them down. Eventually Kurama and Kuwabara lay on the ground, with Hiei barely better on one knee. Sensui complimented their efforts but stated they could not defeat him. But the shock of everyone present was apparent when none other than Yusuke Urameshi flew onto the scene atop Puu. His inner power had revived him as was actually calculated, but not by Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara. Yusuke's newly awakened power was as such where he was able to fight on par with Sensui, albeit leaning more on the defensive. Their battle was so intense and high level that neither Hiei nor his comrades dared to interfere as they knew it would cost them their lives. When Ysuke was possessed by the Mazoku however, the tide turned completely and he beat Sensui horribly then blasted him with a Demon Gun which was an unintentionally fatal blow. Sensui died there and the team of 4 as well as Koenma who had followed, returned to the Human World.
After returning to human world, the reputation of Hiei and Kurama spread throughout the Makai. Both Hiei and Kurama received invitations from none other than the 2 of the 3 Kings of the Makai. Yusuke was intent on going as well after discovering that he was distantly related to the 3rd and longest reigning Demon King Raizen. Since Kuwabara was not a Demon like the other 3 nor was he invited by any of the Kings, he couldn't go. Hie left for the territory of Mukuro, the King who invited him to work for them. When he got there though, Hiei was tested. He was pitted against 500 A Class Demon all by himself. Hi took several days but Hiei had defeated the lot of them. Mukuro came to him at the end of the trial and scolded the Right hand man for only doing as he was literally instructed and for not knowing that when Mukuro ordered that Hiei face 500 A class Demons, they meant 1000. Right then, a surprise person was summoned. None other than Shigure, Hiei's old teacher and the one who implanted his Jagan eye. He was a servant if Mukuro. The two old acquaintances were then commanded to fight each other to the death. Neither hesitated and engaged each other in combat. It was a swift yet intense battle. Shigure's skill was simply too great for Hiei to beat without suffering himself. In their final clash, Hiei sacrificed his arm to cut Shigure. When the clash was over, Shigure complimented his old friend, then the top half of his head fell to the ground Simultaneously, Hiei fell to the ground as he had been cut in half at the waist. He stated there was not a more honorable death than that one. The match was adraw, however, Mukuro did no allow either of them to die. After the trial, Hiei essentially became Mukuro's right hand man and Mukuro was willing to remove the bandages around her head which revealed her true gender as female and the horrible scarring that she had.
After the 3 Kings, Mukuro, Yomi and now Yusuke Urameshi after succeeding his deceased ancestral father had agreed to hold a tournament that would decide the ruler of the entire Demon World, Hiei and Mukuro both participated as did Shigure. Not only those 3 but man past acquaintances including team Chu who had grown stronger albeit not strong enough to compete in the higher caliber matches of the tournament. It finally happened that Hiei faced his new partner Mukuro. They began fighting, but Hiei realized that Muuro was pulling her punches as was going easy on him. In retaliation he used the Dragon of the Darkness Flame which pressured Mukuro, but she split it in half which nobody else had managed before and the force of this, brought Hiei to his knees. He lost the fight but Mukuro came down and embraced him. The two had become quite close but would not turn it into a romance.
The tournament ended with neither Hiei nor Mukuro winning the tournament, rather Enki won, an old acquaintance of the deceased King Raizen. Hiei had taken on the role of finding and rescuing humans that accidentally drifted into the Makai. He and his team consisting of Mukuro's subordinates worked at this but were very bored. After Hiei heard from one that Mukuro probably would have won the tournament had she been at full power, Hiei could not resist the curiosity, He approached Mukuro and asked her to spar with him. She declined at first but after Hiei deliberately provoked her, she punched him out f her headquarters entirely. Hiei remarked that had she used that level of power in the Tournament, she could have won. Hiei knew that he strength depended on her emotional state which was unstable for reason he found out had to do with Mukuro's early horrible abuse as a child by her father. To try and remedy this, Hiei found her pervert father who still lived and went to Kurama for a favor, When he returned to Mukuro, he brought her father before her. He stated that the reason she had never sought revenge on her father as much as she wanted to for eons was because she had mental blocks set in place from before she ever left, placed on her by her father. Hiei presented Mukuro's father before her and he was somehow fuzed with a planet that rapidly regenerated. Hiei demonstrated by stabbing the man's leg who screamed out in pain and begged for mercy. Hiei said the man would beg for death before the end. He then turned to Mukuro and told her to enjoy torturing her father as much as she liked and if she got bored with him, then kill the man. Then Hiei smiled and told her happy birthday.
Hiei was last seen after Yusuke finally returned from the Demon World to the human world. Hiei was seen restying peacefully in a tree.
Other than being a master swordsman, Hiei is also lightning fast, able to move much faster than human and sometimes demon eyes can follow. He is a master of the Kokuryuuha, or Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which he tamed and summons from the Demon Realm for his use through the mystical tattoo on his right arm. The tattoo was created when Hiei merged with the dragon in preparation for the finals of The Dark Tournament. It is actually a permanent burn that was scorched into his arm by the awesome power of the dragon.
He possesses an implanted third eye in the middle of his forehead, called a Jagan eye. Said implant amplifies all his natural powers, and enables him to summon both the hell-fires of his homeland, Demon Realm and the tamer, fires of Ningenkai (Human Realm). At the same time, it grants him several near psychic abilities, such as: Hypnosis, Telepathy, and Remote Viewing powers. Also, the Jagan allows Hiei to see quick movements, which was displayed when he saw that Kuwabara changed what sign he was using when he, Hiei, and Kurama played rock, paper, scissors to see who would fight next in a match in the Dark Tournament.
Yet, despite all this, Hiei must hide it behind a special sutra inscribed strip of cloth he uses as a bandana, because despite it being a part of him, the Jagan is a sentient being. Like the Dragon tattooed on his right arm, it has a mind of its own and needs to be kept in check by such items. Both the Jagan and the Dragon can overcome their "leashes", for their own reasons. The Eye does so only if it is in any way insulted; it did so during Hiei's early fight in the Dark Tournament, against another fire demon. The Dragon overcomes its "sleep" if it feels it is being misled, as it was when Hiei was being manipulated during the "Poltergeist Report" film. Either way, the sutra inscribed items lessen both sentient creatures' drain on Hiei's reserves of yoki, yet both are ready to be revealed when needed, whether he wants them to or not.
Hiei's weapon of choice. It does not appear to have any particular special properties.
Flames summoned from the underworld. They are extremely dangerous and much hotter than fire from the mortal world. When Hiei used it for the first time, the energy emitted from the power surrounded the entirety of the small island "Hanging Neck Island" and when launched, reduced Zeru who was a fire demon no less into ash. Hiei later honed and master the Darkness Dragon, absorbing it into his body, which augmented his physical abilities including his durability drastically. The dragon seems to grow in power as Hiei does. In the Dark Tournament Arc, Hiei could push back a demon of Bui's class, who was below Younger Toguro as an upper B Class Demon. later on, he could push back the S class Sensui and even the King S Class demon Mukuro had difficulty warding off the attack.
As it sounds, simply a blade made from the same darkness flame as the dragon. It rendered Momotaro into ash when impaled.
These flames are ordinary fire found in the human world. They are considerably weaker than the darkness flame but still Hiei resorted to them when he could not use the darkness flame.
