Hetalia is based off of the web comic by Hidekaz Himaruya and tells the stories of personified countries and crazy moments in history.
Hetalia is mainly centered around World War 1 and World War 2, and the Axis Powers (Italy, Germany, and Japan). Though over 40 countries are also personified but appear in later season, or have yet to make an appearance in the anime.
In Word War 1, Germany easily captures Italy, only to realize that the poor pasta loving country is useless. Later in World War 2, Italy becomes Germany's ally (to Germany's horror) and now Germany, Italy, and their new ally Japan must make the best of their sticky situation. Germany is constantly rescuing Italy, and cleaning up the mess he leaves behind, while trying fend of the Allies (France, America, China, Russia, England/UK, and Canada). Though the story mainly revolves around WW2 and the Axis, there are many other side stories about some of the other countries, such as Chibitalia (the story of Italy and his life living with the Holy Roman Empire), the stories of the unfortunate Baltics, the story of little Sealand, and some of the other humorous adventures with the Allies.
