Things are getting pretty bad with all this vampire business in our movies, television, and comic books. We all know it's to the fault of that Twilight series of books and movies. It seems like every production company now comes out with a new vampire series to try and suck every last drop of blood out of this trend while it lasts. There is Vampire DiariesTrue Blood, and even Marvel comics is jumping on the Twit-light wagon with their Death of Dracula event that looks to spread across multiple comics. There was even that attempt at that Twilight manga.
In spite of the trend that is making everyone sick of vampires. Don't forget that manga and anime is filled with really cool, blood sucking, limb ripping, kick-ass vampires. Let's just avoid Twilight by going out and enjoying some really good animes and mangas with vampires that don't SPARKLE. Here is a list of six to get you started.
 Don't Look Into Their Eyes!
 Don't Look Into Their Eyes!

If we're going to start a list off of some awesome vampires, we have to begin with the original blood sucker. The infamous Vlad the Impaler himself. Though, you all may know him by another name if you've been following the Hellsing series. He's better known as Alucard. This is the blood sucking, tough kind of vampire I want to watch. As a member of the Hellsing Coorporation. He uses his twin pistols, Jackal and Casull, to wipe out a bunch of Nazis who want to revive the Third Reich. What's not to love about that?

I have to confess that I've never watched this series before, but after watching clips while doing research for this article. I kept seeing limb ripping, blood splattering, and gun totting violence. When I saw both Alucard's arms get sliced off, but grow right back with such gore in the details. I thought, "Oh yeah, I'm checking this series out.".

Blood +

  Blood Plus
 Blood Plus
Sure, when Blood + starts out you aren't sure that this was all about vampires, but it has some scary looking monsters. The heroine, Saya Otonashi, has to fight a the monstrous hordes of her crazy twin sister, Diva. Both are vampires, but while Saya was pampered. Diva was isolated. Saya has no memories s she's living with her adopted human family. That all changes the night she's attacked by a monster and is force fed blood to awaken her own blood lust. It's a 50 episode series and is pretty cool. Whenever Saya drinks blood she's sent into this killing rage. Her eyes glow red and she uses a specially designed sword that uses her own blood. It's her blood that is the key to the destruction of these creatures and her sister.
It does have some high school drama for a bit, but it quickly moves away from school life and gets to where we all want to see. Dismemberment and disembowelment. There is some unrequited love angles, but it's a side issue to all the violence. Things get pretty messed up.

Negima Volume 3

 Negima! Volume 03
Negima! Volume 03
In the third volume of the Negima! manga we are introduced to the loli vampire, Evangeline McDowell. She's a high-level wanted criminal of the Magical World that all parents talk about to get their kids into bed on time. It was Negi Springfield's own father that that imprisoned Evangeline to the grounds of the Mahora Academy. Now that Negi is her new teacher. She's after his blood to get her freedom. How can you blame her for wanting to escape high school after so many decades?
Though she was Negi's first serious threat of the series. She is a powerful ice-mage who eventually becomes Negi's magical instructor in combat magic. She's one of my favorite characters in the series.

The third volume is a complete story arc where it tells the story of their meeting and big battle to the victory. This is probably up your aisle if you like some good comedy and lots of fanservice mixed with your vampires. If you are still unsure what this volume is all about. Count yourself lucky that I just happen to of written a review recently on this very volume. See the link below.

Vampire Hunter D

  Vampire Hunter D
 Vampire Hunter D
The appropriately named Vampire Hunter D series is starred by.... the vampire hunter named D. He's a half vampire, half human species called a Dhamphir. His mother was a human, but his daddy was the biggest bad vampire of them all. Dracula. (I wonder if this qualifies Alucard as a deadbeat dad?) He roams the earth after a nuclear war to eliminate the noble vampires who are the cruelest of them all.
This series was one of my very first real, mainstream animes. The movie was just so cool. D is the quiet hunter who's best friend seems to be his left hand. D's hand also talks, and it can suck in magic like a vacuum cleaner. There has been a second movie produced, but I haven't been able to see yet. It's called Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It was released in the late September 2001. The trailer looks pretty cool.

Rosario Vampire

  Rosario Vampire
 Rosario Vampire
The Rosario Vampire series is more if you are looking for some funny vampires. I've read some of the manga and watched the first season of the anime. It's a wildly bizarre premise of a human who accidentally enrolls into a school meant for monsters to help them blend into human society. It's a harem comedy series with some pretty cool monster fights. There the main character meets the vampire Moka Akashiya. He's no ordinary vampire either. She wears a special rosario around her neck to keep her "other self" sealed. When removed. She changes into a super vampire with the power to put all lesser monsters in their place.
If you are trying to escape Twilight, because of the lame teen drama. I'm not sure if this is your best choice. Still, it's well drowned out by some nice laughs and pretty wicked fight scenes.

Trinity Blood

  Trinity Blood
 Trinity Blood
The Trinity Blood series is a beautifully animated anime series. The main vampire star is Abel Nightroad. He's another in the long line of vampires hunting other vampires, but there is something special about him. He's a super vampire species called a Crusnik. He works for a special branch of the Vatican Church that investigates threats to humanity around the world from those in the Methuselah breed that wish to conquer the world. Abel is an expert marksman, but his real power is only shown when he releases the nanomachine inhibitors that hold his powers in check. It's then that he uses a wicked looking scythe that is made from crystallized blood.
There is a reason why I put this series at the bottom. While Abel could be incredibly cool at times when he would go into his Crusnik form. He did tend to get pretty emo at times. Too often he would get so depressed and have crying fits. If you can ignore those moments. He's can be pretty cool.

I hope this list either brought back some good memories of vampire characters from manga/anime, or it possibly suggested something you might want to check out for the future. I know I'm going to look more into Hellsing. Do you have any suggestions?
Let us all send our best to those brave souls over at Screened that are required to see the Twilight movie to rate it. They are better men than I.

I would think that Alucard/Dracula in the Vampire Hunter D universe would fall in the same quality parenting category as Gendo Ikari (having read the first 3 books).

Nice list...I agree with your recommendation of the Rosario + Vampire series...I have read the manga and watched both the R+V and Capu2 anime seasons. It is a short, fun series that is highly enjoyible to those who watch it.

I have the original Hellsing series and I love it. I'm most of the way through Blood+ and it's a decent anime to me. Rosario + Vampire is great but the first season is way better than the second in my opinion. Interesing that you include Negima in this list as Evangeline is the only vampire and the story really isn't about her. But it does have to do with magic so you still have the connection.

I would have to disagree with the Rosario + Vampire (Anime at least) but everything else is spot on.

Yep.  That's pretty much a pile of shit.  What about Vampire Knight though?  That's about as close to Twilight as you can get

I agree. While I don't Vampire Knight at least it does a better job at Vampire romance than Twilight.

I must really dislike vampires because I don't enjoy any of those series

there are some on here that i haven't seen, but i otherwise agree wholeheartedly. but vampires are kind of getting tiring at this point. they've just been done to death and some made so horribly (Twilight) that it kind of ruins everything else that was good about them

I was reluctant at first to watch Hellsing (I'm kind of tired of the vampiric trend), but I enjoyed it; I watched the Ultimate series because is closer to the manga.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is very good. Better if you watch it along with the first one. The character designs by Yoshitaka Amano are superb.

Negima, Trinity Blood, and Rosario + Vampire?  Really?
I'm gonna have to say, no.  I hated all three of those.  Hellsing, Blood+, and Vampire Hunter D I can all heartily agree with, though.  Anyway, what about Vampire Princess Miyu?
And don't knock the Vampire Knight; it's pretty decent.
You also could have thrown Blood The Last Vampire on there as well.

Dance in the Vampire Bund is pretty good and from what I've seen, Black Blood Brothers is solid.

I was more concentrating on vampire characters then  series about vampires. Notice that the entire third Volume of Negima! deals with Evangeline, a vampire.

Blood + is a part of the Blood the Last Vampire franchise. I wasn't going to over lap series.
I never watched Vampire Princess Miyu. I had generaly heard of Hellsing before writing this. I wanted to keep my list short and sweet with a variety, and let other people add some ideas.

I watched the first episode of Dance of the Vampire Bund. Little too much loli for me, but I had intended to go back at come point to check a few more episodes out.
I was concentrating on series that I felt were going to be fun, or gory and violent.
I had never seen Black Blood Brothers. I did leave this article open for suggestions.

Ah...Not following the manga I did not know that so thanks for the correction. Dance in the Vampire Bund has a nice story I think a bit of a different look at vampire-human relations. The fact that the vampire princess is a loli can be overlooked. Of course, some third parties complained about the series because she is naked in a show and thus it has been removed from some search engines (which I think is stupid to say the least). I like Black Blood Brothers but I felt it moved too fast and could have ran 24 eps instead of 12.

I've got some episodes of Trinity Blood downloaded, via Amazon VOD. Not a bad series. TB doesn't break any new ground or anything, but it's thoroughly entertaining.
And yes, I own Vampire Hunter D (DVD). Bloodlust isn't as good, but worth owning.
And the best vampire video game EVER is Castlevania Symphony of the Night. The Legacy of Kain series skids in a close 2nd.
