Hmm...I think you are reaching here as much as people who try to say that Shakespeare didn't write Shakespeare's plays. In ponyo we have them go back and we see the world flooded being all peaceful and nice and relaxing. I think it is much more a trying to make tsunami's not scary especially for children. Totoro is more possible but I expect this is wrong to. The issue with Kiki is that her parents don't go look for her or worry about her so the idea that she is running away doesn't work. Here he is talking about children going away and in Japan they do break children off more than in the west where parents can take care of children to long. This is why there is the darkness in shows that are actually marketed to children (fairy musketeers for example) is a cultural difference. They don't coddle their children like we do.

Now the shows are literary and do have messages and are FULL of meat which is definitely why they are good.
