She was infamous at her middle school for being weird and for doing strange things, like painting hieroglyphs around the school or rearranging desks. In spite of this, her natural talent at everything and her good looks led many guys to ask her out (and, she notes, always via phone). She dated each one for a short while before dumping him, some relationships lasting as long as a week and others as briefly as five minutes.
In high school she announced on her first day that she had no interest in ordinary humans, only in aliens, time travelers, and espers. Her classmates once again find her weird and mostly don't talk to her-- except for Kyon, who notices an unusual habit with her hair: on Monday she wears it down, Tuesday with one ponytail, Wednesday with twin pigtails, Thursday with three, Friday with four, Saturday with five. He comments on this to her, only to have her cut her hair shorter and stick with her now-singular style, hair down with a ribbon that has a bow on each side of her head. At this point, she and Kyon began having short conversations before or between classes, usually instigated by Kyon.
Due to Haruhi's various talents, she is scouted for every club at the school and tries each one for a day, rejecting them all for being too dull. At this point Kyon suggested that she start her own club, planting the seed that would eventually become the SOS Brigade ("Sekai o Ōini Moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan," which translates roughly to the "Spreading Excitement All over the World with the Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade." Haruhi naturally appointed Kyon to be a club member, and dragged in several other members: first-year Yuki Nagato, first-year transfer student Itsuki Koizumi, and second-year Mikuru.
Unbeknownst to Haruhi herself, sometime during middle school she changed from being a normal human into being a force that can alter reality as it sees fit. What exactly this force is called is up for debate; scientists of the future who host time traveler Mikuru in the present says she's a crack in the space-time continuum, while the alien Integrated Data Entity, represented by robot Yuki, has concluded that she's a technological singularity that was spontaneously created. Meanwhile, Itsuki's organization-- known only as "the Organization" --suggests that Haruhi is simply God.
The one thing all three groups agree on is that there was some kind of cataclysmic event three years prior to the series' "present," the center of which was Haruhi.
Due to her occasional jealousy when Kyon gets paired up with Mikuru or Yuki durin club activities, and the fact that Kyon is the only "normal human being" that she deigns to spend time with, it is generally assumed that Haruhi has a crush on Kyon, though the extent of this crush is unknown. In general, though, Haruhi is commanding and forceful with Kyon, leading many to characterize her as a "tsundere" character-- outwardly hostile but inwardly in love. This is only one facet of Haruhi's personality, however.
Haruhi is the sort of person who is "good at anything," whether it's sports, arts, school, or any other activity. She has proven particularly gifted in music by a particular episode in which she (along with Yuki) act as last-second replacements in the band ENOZ at the school cultural event. This also shows her growing appreciation for the feelings of those around her.

Central character in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. President of the SOS Brigade. Brash, restless, and completely unaware of her own massive powers.
History
Haruhi was a fairly normal child at first, with a normal family, until one day when she attended a baseball game. At the game, the vast crowd of people in attendance caused her to realize her own insignificance in the grand scheme of things, as well as theirs. She came to the conclusion that there must be SOMEone leading an amazing and interesting life out there, and it is her stated goal in life to find such a person, hence her search for aliens, espers, and time travelers. She was infamous at her middle school for being weird and for doing strange things, like painting hieroglyphs around the school or rearranging desks. In spite of this, her natural talent at everything and her good looks led many guys to ask her out (and, she notes, always via phone). Personality
Externally, Haruhi is blunt, even cold, to most people. Underneath that, she's remarkably upbeat, as well as being determined, hyperactive, and resourceful-- a potentially deadly combination. However, she tends to be oblivious-- intentionally or otherwise --when it comes to other people's feelings and desires. She may not really realize that she's the center of the universe, but she acts like she does, trampling over others to get what she wants without a single thought.Due to her occasional jealousy when Kyon gets paired up with Mikuru or Yuki durin club activities, and the fact that Kyon is the only "normal human being" that she deigns to spend time with, it is generally assumed that Haruhi has a crush on Kyon, though the extent of this crush is unknown.
