Haruhi Suzumiya
The immensely popular novel series upon which the hit anime and manga are based.
On the first day of high school, Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself by declaring that she has no interest in normal humans, but commanding that if there are any aliens, time travelers, or espers around, they should come see her immediately.
Her classmate Kyon wonders if it's a joke, but as time passes and he strikes a tentative friendship with Haruhi, he learns she's dead serious. As she exhausts the school's possibilities within the first couple of weeks, she complains to Kyon that there are no good clubs at the school, and he flippantly suggests that she should start her own club then.
Surely you can see where this is going?...
Haruhi's new club is called the SOS Brigade, and she enlists Kyon as its third member (first being Haruhi, and second being Yuki Nagato, who came part and parcel with the room Haruhi claimed as her own, the Literature Club's). She then drafts second-year student Mikuru Asahina to be the cute mascot for the club and eventually adds the "mysterious" transfer student Itsuki Koizumi as well.
As time passes and Haruhi finds no aliens, time travelers, or espers, Yuki, Mikuru, and Koizumi each approach Kyon and tell him a secret: they are an alien robot, a time traveler from the future, and member of an esper organization, respectively. Each represents a group that has a theory about Haruhi, and while the theories don't always mesh, they all agree that she has the ability to alter reality as she sees fit-- and that she doesn't know it.
Kyon works with the three to keep Haruhi in the dark, and to keep her from changing the world as we know it.
