Happy is a anime/manga character in the Fairy Tail franchise
| |

Hello everyone, I'm Taka, your neighborhood wiki editor. In this blog, I'll share my experiences getting into One Piece and Toriko from a Fairy Tail fan's perspective and tell you whether you should or should not try these two Shonen series if you're unfamiliar with it.

How I got into One Piece and Toriko?

I got into One Piece back in Summer 2012 while I got into Toriko back in November 2013 because I saw a lot of folks talking about it. In One Piece's case, DestinyHeroKnight and ShadowKnight508 were the ones who pushed me into One Piece. For Toriko, I got interested because of Taichokage, Othus12, SpeedForceSpider, and the rest of the battle gang.

Note: I hit my word limit for the blog''s title.

Should FT fans Get Into One Piece?

One Piece by Eiichiro Oda

Monkey D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become king of all pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line, this is one captain who’ll never drop anchor until he’s claimed the greatest treasure on Earth – the Legendary One Piece!

Yes, most fans will get into One Piece because there is so many similarities. It's a lot easier to transition into One Piece from Fairy Tail because of the similarities. Here is a brief list of what these two franchises share in common.

Luffy's crew and Natsu's Fairy Tail guild gets into trouble with the law. Both sides fight for their Nakama and time skips. The differences are that One Piece is about the exploration and fight towards their dreams. Fairy Tail doesn't really have a goal. It seems like an endless adventure with evil guilds and groups who messes with Fairy Tail guild. For Natsu, he was searching for his father, Igneel, in episode 1. It never pops up again. Both series are warm hearted and funny, but One Piece's fight scenes have some blood, and it isn't afraid of showing people dying, both manga and anime. Fairy Tail's anime is bloodless compared to its manga.

Sometimes, you wonder if Fairy Tail is ripping off One Piece with its scenes and certain characters (Shanks and Gildarts Clive).

I posted this table in DestinyHeroKnight's I prefer One Piece over Fairy Tail a long time ago.

One PieceSimilarities and DifferencesFairy Tail
Monkey D. Luffy
Monkey D. Luffy

Similarities

  • Both Natsu and Luffy are oblivious to women's feelings for them. (IE: Luffy to Boa Hancock and Natsu to Lucy (who's unsure).
  • Both are big eaters and smile a hell lot.
  • Both won't back down when their friends' lives are at stake.
  • Both have scars. Luffy has one underneath his left eye and a big one on his chest. Natsu has one at his neck.

Differences

  • Luffy is a rubber man who can stretch while Natsu's a Dragon Slayer with fire powers.
  • Occupations: Luffy is a pirate, and Natsu is a mage. Same goes for everyone in this list
  • Weaknesses: Luffy can't swim, and sharp objects are bad. In Natsu's case, motion sickness.
Natsu Dragneel
Natsu Dragneel
Nami
Nami

Similarities

  • Both love money and have large breasts.
  • Both lost a loved one. (IE: Nami's adopted mother Bellemere and Lucy's Layla Heartfilia)

Differences

  • Background: Lucy comes from a rich family while Nami's family is poor.
  • Nami is a navigator who knows geography and anything in her field well. Lucy is book smart in Celestial Magic.
  • Nami has a tragic past.
Lucy Heartfilia

Similarities

  • Both lost a loved one who is also female. (IE: Zoro's Kuina and Gray's Ur).
  • Both compete with the main character, Zoro w/ Luffy and Gray w/ Natsu. Though, Natsu and Gray' are more rivals than Zoro and Luffy.
  • Both are brawlers.
  • Both attract strange women. For Gray, it's Juvia while for Zoro, it's Perona.

Differences

  • Zoro is a swordsman while Gray is an ice mage.
  • Zoro has no sense of direction.

Quick Breakdown of One Piece

For Fairy Tail fans, you should try One Piece out. I quickly list some pros and cons.

Pros

  • Different Style of Humor
  • A wealth of characters that have quirks (such as laughter Saul's Dereshi and that Amazon's Za za za)
  • Origin Stories are pretty deep
  • Characters die permanently or stay dead in One Piece. You will shed a tear or at least sympathize with the characters. Fairy Tail is too soft with its character deaths (with the exception of Simon and the others). I got angry at Fairy Tail for bringing back one character (L****a) and never expand her relationship with one character.
  • One Piece capitalizes on exploration than Fairy Tail.
  • Fight Scenes - One Piece's longer for sure. The quality of the fight between the two series depends on the fan's tastes. If you want serious fights, One Piece and Fairy Tail will disappoint you. There are comedic moments where the good guys and enemies fool around. I notice that fans hate Sting's fight with Erza's Fairy Tail group because it ended without much resistance. One Piece's fights go all out.

Cons

  • Story arcs in One Piece are way longer than Fairy Tail's (might be a hit or miss for fans who prefer shorter arcs)
  • Fan Service - Fairy Tail has more T & A than One Piece until the time skip in One Piece. However, Fairy Tail went full on nudity with Lucy and the gang, more hot spring and beach scenes. Fairy Tail is quite liberal with clothing damage than One Piece. Lucy's clothes fall apart faster than Nami during battle.
  • No Lolis and Other Fetishes - I don't think One Piece has girls like Wendy Marvell. Fairy Tail caters to a wide variety of fetishes than One Piece. One Piece (after time skip) emphasizes on boobs. Fairy Tail got boobs, pettanko, maids, waitresses, and megane.
  • Fillers - It's hard to say. Fairy Tail had a huge filler arc at the end before the tournament arc. Fairy Tail doesn't do flashback fillers. I remember in Water Seven, One Piece did a few episodes that recap the Straw Hat crew's struggles.
  • Romance - You definitely have some shipping in both series. For One Piece, it's mostly unrequited love between Boa and Luffy. In Fairy Tail's case, part of the fun is with the cast who can be shipped and teased in many ways. Fairy Tail has more romance in it than One Piece.

Should FT Fans Try Toriko?

Toriko by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro

The world is full of deliciously deadly ingredients that the wealthiest appetites in existence can't wait to devour. Toriko, the legendary Gourmet Hunter, is ready and willing to track down the rarest animals on the planet and put them on a plate!

Toriko is a different Shonen beast. Like One Piece, Toriko is about exploration with an emphasis on food. When I first read the premise, I was puzzled on how a show can be all about hunting the best ingredients and filling out one's Full Course Menu. A Full Course Menu is a Gourmet Hunter's dream menu. I admit it was awkward getting into Toriko, but I enjoyed it after reading the first few chapters. For the characters, One Piece and Fairy Tail's characters start off weak. For Toriko, I believe they start off strong. Toriko is well known due to his Four Heavenly King reputation I haven't read past chapter 80 or so, the Century Soup Arc. I might be wrong.

Quick Break on Toriko

Pro

  • Fight Scenes are pretty great and brief. Since I haven't got far in Toriko, I can't really confirm if Fairy Tail's fights are longer or shorter than Toriko's. The fights in Toriko are like One Piece. Characters will use their wits and their abilities to beat their enemies rather than powering up like in Natsu Dragneel's case.
  • A compassionate, weak character who is a Dude in Distress - Komatsu was one interesting side character. He remind me of Manta Oyamada (Shaman King) more than Krillin of DBZ. Fairy Tail does have weak characters, but they're not a key supporting character.
  • Toriko isn't sexist - I could be wrong here since Othus12 and the gang told me Tina was a damsel. I haven't watch past episode 10 in the anime. Since Fairy Tail has more girls, Lucy and some of the gals were damsels. Toriko actually had Komatsu do a bit of gender reversal role. Toriko doesn't rely on sex appeal for its audience. It's worth noting it. One Piece's Time Skip went with the fan service route, Nami, Boa, and Nico.
  • Story arcs - Fairy Tail and Toriko's are roughly the same length up to the part where I left off, but I could be wrong here.
  • Toriko has more bromance than Fairy Tail.

Con

  • Fan Service - In this current era of anime, I'm surprised that Toriko has a huge male cast just like Dragon Ball Z. Most anime series you see out there have a cute gal who tags along with the male hero (IE: Ichigo and Rukia, Natsu and Lucy, and most harem series). Though, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball manage to deliver fan service and beautiful women. Being left off at the Century Soup Arc with 80 chapters in, Rin is the only predominant female character. For the anime, they introduce Tina. It depends on your tastes. Most Fairy Tail fans I know love T & A (some don't admit it, but I know they do), so most of them will find Toriko disappointing in this section.
  • Fillers - I leave this blank for Toriko fans.
  • Lack of Romance - I haven't seen much love. Fairy Tail's romantic relationships are fun to watch. Fans would ship characters. When I got into Toriko, the only person shipped was Rin and Toriko. Though, Toriko is like Goku and Luffy. Plus, Rin doesn't have much of a spotlight. It's hard to root for Rin.

I do want to make a table for Toriko and Fairy Tail's characters, but there isn't much similarities and not enough girls on Toriko's side.

Thank everyone for reading this blog. I hope you enjoy Toriko and One Piece. Feel free to drop a comment or a correction (since I wasn't far into Toriko).

  • Both Natsu and Toriko are oblivious to women's feelings for them. (IE: Toriko to Rin? and Natsu to Lucy (who's unsure).
  • Both are big eaters.

Differences

  • Toriko is human with superhuman qualities (Nail, Fork techniques) while Natsu's a Dragon Slayer with fire powers.

Welcome to the new series of blogs called Family Time! I had this weekly idea of doing Moe Monday, Tsundere Tuesday, and such, but I scrapped the idea. I didn't watch a lot of anime to keep the writing mojo going. This family time theme I'm doing will put some love in this community. Family is more than blood. Some of you folks are watching with friends, neighbors, co-workers, and etc. They're family, too. I was inspired by Sam Weller who wrote articles about watching Madoka Magica with his girlfriend to do this blog.

A little background info:

Watching anime on Saturday mornings with my brothers and sister was a pastime back then. Now, with the age of the internet, my family and I are watching new shows on Youtube (mainly Funimation's) before settling down on Crunchyroll and HULU. I never thought myself as an anime fan, more like a casual watcher. During my Anime Vice years back in October 2010, I tried a lot of anime series, and the main one that my family and I have watching since 2010 was Fairy Tail. It has been almost three years, and when Hiro Mashima had told the fans that the anime is going to end on March 30, I was a bit sad. All good things come to an end sooner or later. I thought it would be a good time to start this thread on Fairy Tail and share some nostalgic feelings that my siblings had.

Before I talk about the fun times that my family had with Fairy Tail, here is a synopsis of the show for those who are new to this franchise:

Fairy Tail revolves around Natsu Dragneel, Happy, and Lucy Heartphilia who are members of a guild called Fairy Tail. The three go on missions seeking adventure and end up making a big mess of things. Fairy Tail is known for causing lots of havoc and getting into fights with those who seek to hurt their guild members.

Family Time!

*Don't worry, I didn't put any spoilers.

It started with the manga
It started with the manga

I got started on Fairy Tail when my little sister came home from the public library and checked out first volume. She mentioned that she picked it out because the cover reminded her of One Piece due to the drawings. I was surprised that the man who did Rave Master was behind Fairy Tail. After reading the first volume together, we were hooked on Fairy Tail with its humorous shenanigans and its lovable characters. For my little brother, he loved Happy so much especially the parts where Happy teased Lucy. My sis loves Freed because of his cool ability with Runes. When we're done reading all the volumes that the public library had on the shelves, my sister found out that Fairy Tail had an anime. I had no expectations on the voices or music, so I was open to anything. When watching the first episode, I enjoyed the voices for Natsu, Lucy, and Happy along with everyone else. Also, the first opening theme song still remained in my head for these past years just like Bleach and Pokemon.

What Fairy Tail appealed to my little siblings and me was the comedic scenes and misadventures of Natsu's guild and the whole fighting for your Nakama themes. Back then, I didn't mind the shonen cliches of one fighting for loved ones. I find Natsu's speech when he fights tough opponents for the sake of his friends admirable. Makes his big fights all emotional. Erza and Gray had great chemistry in Natsu's group. These guys always gave some good laughs and fights. As the years gone by, Fairy Tail was starting to lose its appeal by the Edolas arc. My older brother didn't enjoy how Fairy Tail brings someone back without any real place for the character. It makes their back story meaningless. With the recent filler arc, it is hard to look forward to Fairy Tail. At that time, Sket Dance was the most popular thing in my household. Though, Fairy Tail outlasted Sket Dance when Sket Dance came to an early end in August 2012. The last arc, the tournament, for the anime kept us watching the anime. Some fights are awesome while the others are disappointing. The only one who enjoyed the Fairy Tail the most up to this day was my youngest brother.

Issues with Fairy Tail

Folks who read Fairy Tail hoped the anime has blood and lose some censorship. I didn't mind those changes neither did my siblings. Though at some point, scenes that has characters exhausted and coughing looks strange without blood. As for fan service, manga has a lot of it. Anime has them too but in small doses. Even though my youngest bro is 10 years old, I had no trouble with Fairy Tail. It's pretty tame; however, the OVAs are a different story.

In the end, Fairy Tail will still have a place with my family because we can't forget Natsu and his lovable gang who brought us some laughter and tears.

Hope you enjoy this blog! I hope it motivates you guys and gals to share about watching anime or reading manga with family and friends.

Howdy everyone, welcome to the Fairy Tail vs Buster Keel thread! This blog is going to be rushed, so I will fill major details later. Beware of spoilers because I'm doing character analysis especially for Lucy/Lavie and Gray/Blue.

Plot

Buster Keel
Buster Keel

Buster Keel is about Lavi and her sidekick Mippy who are on a quest to be top class adventurers. One day, they meet Keel who is searching for a man named Siva to restore his body. The three team up to help each other. In their quest, they find out that they have a bigger role to save the world from evil.

Plot

Fairy Tail
Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is about a guild called Fairy Tail, and it follows the adventures of Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartphilia, Happy, and others who are always getting in trouble with the law and bad guilds.

I will fill in the general similarities and differences between the series. Right now, the characters are important.

Characters

First up is similarities and then differences.

Similarities

  • Both have spikey hair style.
  • Both have no tact when they interact with women. (IE: Natsu Dragneel will tease Lucy a bit while Keel is plain rude to Lavi).
  • Both have immense physical strength, agility, and heightened sense of smell.
  • Both have extreme tenacity and will not give up in their battles.

Differences

  • Natsu is born human, but he has Dragon Slaying powers that were taught by his adopted father/dragon, Igneel. In Keel's case, he is originally a Dragon-ape who was forced to turn human due to a spell by Siva.
  • Tattoos: Natsu's Fairy Tail stamp is on his right arm while Keel's tattoo is on his left arm.
  • Natsu possesses flame magic due to being a Dragon Slayer. Keel has no magic nor attributes. Keel is a pure brawler.

  • While both have lovable sidekicks, Lavi's is a flying pig, and Lucy's is a carrot nosed dog named Plue.
  • Magic and Roles: Lavi's magic stems from music and it's more of a support magic. In Lucy's case, her magic is summoning Celestial Spirits.
  • Equipment: Lavi has a guitar while Lucy has a whip.
  • Bust Size: Lucy's boobs are bigger than Lavi.
  • Clothing: Lucy's clothing tend to be more revealing, and Lucy cosplays often. Lavi's clothing is more modest, and she does not cosplay.

Welcome to this week's Fairy Tail coverage! I'm Taka who is here to give you update on the latest Fairy Tail episode and wiki progress. We are deep in this filler arc as we uncover the mysteries behind the Infinity Clock. Last week, we had a stellar battle between Mirajane and Mary Hughes, and the episode keeps making Erza's gang wear those tight black spandex that the Big Butt Bandits wear.

Plot

Natsu is taking on Byro one one one, and he has difficulty since Byro nullifies all magic. It's a physical contest with plenty of arguments between Fairy Tail and Byro over what is right and wrong. Meanwhile, Kinana is remembering her dark past when she was a snake with Cobra, and the Archbishop is going insane.

The Oracion Seis Returns
The Oracion Seis Returns

Will Natsu defeat Byro before chaos ensues?!

Verdict

Good

You tell them, Happy!
You tell them, Happy!
  • Since the time that Happy has backed up Charle in Edolas, Happy makes another great comeback when he calls Byro's cause, Fake Righteousness.
  • Unlike the manga, Kinana finally gets some coverage. Though, I hope she is not a total filler character. I love her scene especially when she laughs hysterically.
  • The Oracion Seis makes a return. What I like about the filler arc is that they show characters with time skip changes (who didn't appear in the manga) such as the Mercenary Brothers. I can't believe JackPot is one of the six since he replaces HotEye or Zero/Brain. Erigor is a nice addition to the team. I wonder what keys Angel has now since Lucy jack all her Celestial Spirits.

Bad

Our guild is about friendship! Hell Yeah!
Our guild is about friendship! Hell Yeah!
  • Random Crap that Ruins the Serious Moments: During Happy's time in the spotlight when he talks back to Byro, Dan, Natsu, and Lucy ruins the scene in the background. Random dialogues from Happy and Dan are not needed. For example, Dan comments that Natsu had a hideous face. Of course he does since Natsu was beaten to bloodyless pulp by Byro.
  • Action over Dialogue: This is a hit or miss with fans who want more action. This episode had a lot of dialogue. I didn't mind it.
  • Shonen Cliches: Natsu's gang talk about friendship. For those who hate that stuff, this episode can kill your mood.

Overall, this episode is good but not excellent since it can be slow with so much dialogue going between Natsu's gang and Byro. Coco is just like her Edolas counterpart when she betrays her side to not sacrifice anyone, Pantherlily.

Thanks

Wiki Progress: I can't remember what happened this week due to wiki projects and Sket Dance Wikia. Plus, I had Quick Picks stuff with BigHeart711.

Daniel and I finished Ep. 139's page, and we just need to add images. I don't know we worked on the character pages this week. Oh, I added Blu-Ray and DVD merchandise to the Fairy Tail anime page.

It has been a long wait, but fans of the vastly popular Fairy Tail franchise can indulge themselves with a new trailer of the upcoming film Fairy Tail: The Maiden of the Phoenix (Fairy Tail: Hoo no Miko) been released and published yesterday on ANN. Welcome to the Weekly Fairy Tail report! I'm Taka, and I'm glad to be with you guys and gals as we cover the 9th episode of the Key of the Starry Sky arc.

Plot

When Dan and Natsu crash into the chapel, Happy and Michelle has a plan to use Lucy as a decoy. Meanwhile, Erza and the gang meet the Big Butt Bandits where Wendy and Erza dons the bandits' trademark black, spandex suits. What in god's name is wrong with this episode?! Will Natsu and Erza's company beat their enemies?

Verdict

Good

Charle's nightmare is cute
Charle's nightmare is cute
  • For the first time, Lucy's sex appeal actually works. I love how Happy cried at that moment even though Lucy used her seductive charms on the wrong men who have different taste.
  • Speaking of Happy, Charle's nightmare is hilarious. She just scream which is out of character, but I enjoyed so well. An army of big booty Wendy in tight, black spandex is chasing Charle is a great scene.
  • I can't talk about Erza's scene yet. It's pretty great.

Bad

  • I find the scene with the Big Butt Bandits and Erza's group confusing. I don't know why Erza fools around with them and asks them silly questions instead of kicking their butts. It's a pretty boring scene until Wonderful Gocche pulls out a sneaky attack on Erza.

WTF Moment

I copy this element from FoxxFireArt's reviews just to change things for a little bit.

Erza gets a Point Blank Ecstasy
Erza gets a Point Blank Ecstasy
  • When Wonderful Gocche jumps in front of Erza with his behind pointing at her and unleashes a Point Blank Ecstasy attack, I felt bad for her. Plus, I can't believe I laugh at such a nasty scene.

Overall, the episode is good, but the Big Butt Bandits scene might be a hit or miss with the fans. In the next episode, Pantherlily takes on Samuel who has a second form like him. I feel psyched for next week's episode.

Thanks
