One Piece Vol 1 JPN (2003)
One Piece Vol 1 JPN (2003)

Haki (覇気) is a special ability that was introduced in the One Piece series by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. The earliest example of these powers was in in One Piece Volume 1 CH. 1 "Romance Dawn", and the anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 4 "Luffy’s Past! Enter Red-Haired Shanks!". The power was unnamed at the time, another power was shown in the Skypiea Arc that began in Volume 26, and only officially named in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc that began in Volume 50.

It's a power that has shown as a match for the series Devil Fruit abilities. It was originally thought to be a rare ability, but was later revealed as a power that is in all living creatures. It's just that not everyone has the ability to tap it. Some can even go their entire lives without reaching this power, even if they try.

There are three different forms of Haki. One that allows you to predict an person's moves, one that can intimidate opponents, and another that can be used for attacking. Due to the natural strengths and weaknesses of individuals, people tend toward the Haki abilities that best suit their personality. Haki (覇気) literally translates into English as "Ambition". Originally, FUNimation was using the literal translation for their subtitle work. That alteration was later changed to "Haki".

It was first believed that the ability of Haki was only introduced after the Thriller Bark arc. In the scene where Luffy caused the large water buffalo animal of Duval's to pass out. In fact, this ability may date back as far as Volume 1 of the manga and Episode 4. In the scene where Shanks dives in to save Luffy and the local Sea King monster took his arm. He was able to scare this monster off with just a look from his eyes and the command to leave. In the Sky Islands of the White Sea. One of the Haki powers was known in their land as Mantra.

Haki Abilities

Observation Haki (Presence)

Boa Sadersonia using Observation Haki

Observation Haki (見聞色, Kenbunshoku / Color of Observation) is the power to predict a person's movements, but only what is directly on the mind. It is also known on the Sky Islands as Mantra. If this power in strengthened, a person could even be able to sense the presence and numbers of others who aren't even in sight.

Armament Haki (Fighting Spirit)

Armament Haki (武装色, Busoushoku / Color of Armor) is an attack power. This has been shown to be able to attack the body directly and no Devil Fruit power has been shown to be able to defend against it. This includes the powerful Logia types. Even Luffy's rubber body or Admiral Kizaru's light body have no immunity to these powers. This Haki is as if the user is wearing an invisible armor.

Weapon-based Haki

Haki Arrows
Haki Arrows

With this form of Haki. a user can infuse various weapons with Haki powers and strength. As was seen when Silvers Rayleigh used a metal sword against Admiral Kizaru's light sword. It's also believed that this power can be added to bullets, among other projectile weapons.

On the island of Amazon Lily in the Calm Belt of the world. Though the Kuja Amazons have mostly never heard of the Devil Fruit powers. The power of Haki is well known. It appears that all fighters of the island are able to infuse their arrows with the Armament Haki. The arrows have an extremely powerful impact that is explosive.

Armament Hardening

Armament Hardening
Armament Hardening

Armament Hardening (武装色 硬化 Busō-shoku: Kōka) is an advanced form of Armament Haki. Rather than an invisible armor surrounding the body of the user, a segment of the body changes to a black color and become incredibly dense but still moveable. This makes a user's strike or guard nearly impenetrable. It was first seen when Luffy used his Elephant Gun attack, but later on he showed the ability to change any part of his body hard at will.

This technique is not exclusive to Luffy either. Later in the series, the Vergo, a Marine spy for Donquixote Doflamingo, was later revealed as a Armament Haki master that could form his entire body and object he's holding.

Conqueror's Spirit (Intimidation)

Conqueror's Spirit
Conqueror's Spirit

The ability called the Conqueror's Spirit (覇王色, Haoushoku Haki), is the power to command and control the wills of others. It's an ability that is most likely found in those who gain fame in the world. When used it an cause people surrounding the user to pass out or even control the person's will for a short time. It's an intimidation tactic that is not to be abused, because it will effect all that surround. Though in Sabaody Archipelago, Silvers Rayleigh was able to make only those he willed to pass out. It's one of the rarest forms of Haki, but cannot be trained or strengthened. It is measured by the user's own spirit, and reinforced through personal growth.

Haoushoku Haki (覇王色) literally translates to Conqueror's Color.

Known Haki Users

Despite that Haki is a power that all humans possess, only a rare few in One Piece have been shown to be able to tap this skill and use it. Even fewer have shown the ability to use all of them at once.
