dot hack//sign is based in a game universe called THE WORLD and tells a mistory and tail of a boy named Tsukasa, who for some unknown reason is trapped in the game, along the way he meets a girl called Mimiru and other friend that help him.
THE WORLD is an online game that meets fantasy with reality. it is ruled by a corporation called CC corporation, where a group of employees go in the game and maintain peace, these employees are called The Silver Nights. Unknowingly, THE WORLD has a legendary idem called the Key of the Twilight, witch is said to over right the game systems and rules, but this idem was never found so it turned into a myth. THE WORLD also has a spirit of sorts called Aura, this character is an A.I. witch its creator is still unknown. as the get deeper and deeper into Tsukasa's unknown problem of not being able to log out, they find that THE WORLD has dark secrets, that can harm people in real life!
