The Black Swordsman Arc
The first appearance of Guts is when he was having sex with what appears to be a demon, however he then destroyed it with his arm cannon.The action followed Guts to a bar where for the first time we see Puck who is being taunted by drunken thugs. Guts walked up to the bartender and proclaimed he was going to mess the place up. Next we see Guts ready his bow and begins to slaughter the thugs, all of whose strength paled in comparison to Guts. The last man however Guts does not kill, as he wants him to deliver a message to his master in Koka Castle. The message was simply "The Black Swordsman has come."
It's here where we first see Guts draw his sword and the next minute, he slices a man in two in one slash, much to the amazement of everyone nearby. Puck saw Guts' killing spree as saving him so decided he would follow Guts.
Guts continues to walk ignoring Puck's constant chatter until Puck tries to sit on Guts' shoulder, this slightly annoys Guts who slaps Puck away. He says it is because he does not like being touched. When Guts turns around he is surrounded by armed guards who capture him and lock him up while torturing him. The Mayor then enters and explains to Guts that because he killed those men in the bar that "The Master" would destroy their village.
Guts then explains that he knows very well the situation in the village and that the mayor is sending human sacrifices to "the master". Guts believes that he is doing this to protect himself rather than the village. This angers the mayor who then tells the torturer to do whatever he wants to Guts except kill him.
When the action next returns to Guts he is lying face first on the ground, sitting across the room from him is what appears to be a small deformed human fetus. It is shown that Guts recognizes this, but it is not known what significance it has to him. However, Guts is fearful of it and warns it to stay away from him.
Guts Killing things
Guts would appear to be doomed, trapped in the cell. However Puck brings Guts the Key to the cell, and it is then we learn that Puck as an elf has the power to heal Guts's wounds. While doing this he finds a brand on Guts's neck and when Puck goes to touch it Guts gets angry. When Guts mocks Puck calling him an insect he leaves and Guts seems to be affected by this, and for the first time showing something other than heartlessness.
The Master is attacking the town as the mayor had predicted and in no time Guts shows up, previously saying he was looking forward to it. In no time Guts is destroying the surrounding soldiers with a fierce gaze in his eyes, hacking up horses and catapulting arrows through the skulls of the men. Finally the battle between "the master" and Guts commences. Guts repeatedly fires arrows at the faces of his enemy and appears to have won easily, then Guts is thrown across the room and we see that his enemy has changed into some kind of beast. A sort of human-cobra monster now confronts Guts, who is now no match. He is pummelled into the ground again and again. As the final blow is about to be dealt, Guts turns the tables and blasts his arm cannon directly into the face of "the master" who is actually called an apostle. While dazed from losing half his face Guts finishes the fight by slicing the apostle in two pieces. However, before the apostle dies, Guts asks "Where are the five members of God Hand?" To this, he is not given a suitable answer and lets the apostle slowly burn as he leaves town, mission accomplished.
Upon leaving the town he arrives in a forest surrounded by strange beings who appear to be chasing Guts and taunting him. However this is short lived and before long (much to Guts' disgust) he is reunited with Puck who again offers to heal him. It is not before long that Guts flicks Puck away again and leaves saying he
Guts and his brand
Guts reveals then that its the brand on his neck which is why he is being pursued.
After a vicious battle, Guts and Puck carry on their way. When the two arrive at the next town they arrive to a horrible scene, a woman has just been beheaded. Guts picks up the head and throws it at the count (leader of the city). Guts appears to know something about him. After this Guts is being pursued by the town guards and as he is running away he is again surrounded. This time however he decides to slaughter them rather than be captured.
