Today's Episode:

Oh, wow, that last episode hurt my soul with its amazing-ness. Its unfortunate, but today's episode obviously can't be near as epic. That's just the nature of things, right? If things were exciting all the time, we wouldn't be able to recognize moments of true greatness. Well, don't let that discourage you... just don't expect scenes like yesterday's transformation.

I'm probably going to get ripped by all the Gurren Lagann fans out there but I'm having a hard time getting into this series. There just doesn't seem like a lot of depth to the plot. Even after 4 episodes. It feels like the series is more about big boobs and big fights than any real story. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Just not what I was expecting. Maybe I was just expecting too much. You who have watched the series already, does the story get better? More sub-plots, mystery, etc.?

@kwyrt: Hmm, in an attempt to respond without giving anything away...this is definitely not what I'd call a subtle series, so if that's what you're hoping for, you probably won't get it. But there is some depth to it as well, particularly as things move forward. In fact, the next episode may give you more of what you want, so I'd recommend holding out at least that long :)

That said...what, John, no mention of the infamous incident relating to this episode? If anyone is concerned that the animation quality has just taken a sudden lurch downwards, it's not quite the case; this episode was guest-directed by Osamu Kobayashi ( BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, Kimagure Orange Road), and the visuals were his particular choice.

The episode was so poorly received in Japan that the comments from 2channelers actually prompted Gainax cofounder Takami Akai to complain about anime fans to another animator on Mixi (a social networking site in Japan), which fans eventually found and flipped out about, causing Akai to step down as producer on Gurren Lagann. (IIRC, I believe he also "left Gainax," but it's not the first time he's done so, and he's back there now, at least as of his attendance with Gainax at Fanime Con the year before last.)

Crazy stuff! Do you guys think the visuals are that bad?

Yea, this episode sucks. The characters head features change size when they turn.
