That's a lot of Gunslinging Girls
That's a lot of Gunslinging Girls

So this came in the mail recently. After using the similar franchise tab on the site and posting some thoughts on the first episode a blog or two ago, I thought I would give the series a go. This was listed as the "complete collection" which is the first two seasons and an OVA. I haven't gotten into it yet, so all I can really talk about is the box art and case construction. It's definitely not as impressive as Black Lagoon's tin boxes considering it's just cardboard and plastic cases. It's got some nice artwork in the form of season 2 and the OVA... but season 1 definitely got the short end of the stick with the standard character poses.

The cardboard sleeve has that one pose for Henrietta they use everywhere as she fires a P90 while squatting so... they nailed it there, I guess.

I'll be watching it in the next few weeks and probably do some wiki work when I'm done. I see the Gunslinger Girl section of the wiki could use some screenshots so I'll be more than happy to provide. I haven't decided if I'll post thoughts as I go or wait till the end... but I guess that depends on what happens.

To prevent this from being completely pointless, what's some great box art any of you guys have seen or bought? I'm sure there are plenty of cool examples out there.

I only own one anime series and that is Solty Rei. It's box is very similar to the above in that it is a cardboard sleeve with plastic cases with some art on it. Art looks pretty nice as the characters are very colourful and are placed on a mostly white background so they stick out pretty well.

I don't really know of that many boxes but I did find a really amusing Lucky Star package.

I really wanna see someone wearing that. It won't be me because I don't want to throw away my dignity.

@SuperWristBands: I'm not familiar with the Lucky Star show (with the exception of the often parodied intro), is that supposed to be a swim suit on the T-shirt?

Also, I have to admit I don't think I would ever invest in a huge box for a series. The Black Lagoon cases were nice because they seemed pretty durable. You know, for CD cases.

Semi-related note: Nyankoi! was a guilty pleasure of mine, a harem comedy with a twist that was funnier than it should have been. So it figures that this is the box art for the DVD set, and therefore why I can't bring myself to spend money on it.

@Sarumarine: That is most certainly a swimsuit. There were other sets as well (vol 1, 2, 3, etc.) and they all have a different shirt. The other two have school uniforms on them. It's certainly an interesting choice of a collectors item.

I wouldn't buy a huge box either but my reasons are the price. That thing up there is around $50 and it is only 1/6th of the series.

@DocHaus: Heh heh, yeah... that box art...

I'm the kind of guy that enjoys simple or minimalist box art. The first season Black Lagoon tin had that going on. The Gunslinger Girl cardboard sleeve isn't too bad... although they have way better stuff on the plastic cases.

@SuperWristBands: Fifty bucks is pretty rough for that. I once found the first season of a show called Burn Notice for less than twenty dollars, so I've grown accustomed to low prices. The Gunslinger Girl collection was barely 30 dollars, so I'm pretty happy with that.
