Overview

This franchise is made up of a Playstation2 game developed by Red Entertainment and released in 2002, and an anime adaption written by Yousuke Kuroda which began in October of 2003 and ran until March 2004.

Plot

Falsely implicated in a gangland shootout that caused the death of his putative father-in-law, mild-mannered Brandon Heat is on the run with his old orphanage buddy Harry McDowell. When love interest Maria becomes a ward of the Millennium underworld syndicate, Brandon joins them, hoping to get closer to her. Brandon and Harry rise up the organization, until the ambitious Harry turns on his former ally, betraying and killing his best friend to become head of Millennium, with so much power he even has national politicians in his pocket.

However, Brandon is brought back to life in the style of Robocop by the mysterious Lightning organization, whose secret Necrolyze project transforms him from a deadly sweeper into the invincible assassin without limits known as Beyond The Grave. His mighty handguns (named after Cerberus, three-headed guard dog of Hell) can mow down any opposition, and he is identified by his burning desire to keep a promise , to protect and the giant coffin he carries on his back.

Years after they first clawed their way out of the ghetto, the pair return to face each other on their old stamping ground-Harry abandoned by his own men, with a price on his head, Grave with his reanimated body starting to shut down. How will a story of two orphans who where once friends end?

Brandon Heat joined Millenion with his friend Harry MacDowell after there friends where killed in order to be close to Maria after she went to live with Big Daddy. After being accused of being a traitor and killed he comes back as Beyond the Grave to protect Mika as well as carry out a promise he made before his death.
Harry MacDowell
Adult Harry Voiced by: Tsutomu Isobe, Tom Wyner
Young Harry Voiced by: Kenji Hamada , Tony Oliver
Gender: Male
Harry MacDowell was an orphan who has always dreamed of being on top and free to do what ever he wanted. After his friends are killed he joins up with Millenion quickly moving up the ladder with his goals directed at the top spot.
Maria Asagi
Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue Michelle Ruff
Gender: Female
Maria Asagi once saved by Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell became friends with them. After her uncle is killed by the same men who killed Brandon and Harry's friends she goes to live with Big Daddy and after being told by Brandon to be happy she began a relationship with Big Daddy later having his child. After Big Daddy is killed she takes Mika and goes on the run with the help of Mr. Tokioka Big Daddy's butler.
Mika Asagi
Voiced by: Kumi Sakuma Kari Wahlgren
Gender: Female

Mika Asagi was born into a world where her life was in danger with the guidance of her mother Maria Asagi and her fathers butler Mr. Tokioka she grew into a strong 15 year old girl. After Millenion find them Mr. Tokioka spirits her away with the case and her mothers words of "Go where he is." She meets Beyond the Grave previously Brandon Heat and goes after the man responsible for the deaths of her mother and father Bloody Harry.

Dr. Tokioka
Voiced by: Motomu Kiyokawa , William Frederick Knight
Gender: Male
Dr. Tokioka developed the Necrolyzation process and after Harry took it over agreed to work for him rather than die but truly regretted that his invention lead to such a destructive and devastating technology. He brings Beyond the Grave back in accordance with Brandon Heats letter. He also protects Mika and often helps Grave out with weapons and body maintenance.
Big Daddy
Voiced by: Iemasa Kayumi , Michael McConnohie
Gender: Male
Big Daddy created Millenion in order to protect any family he left in the world and was saddened by the what Harry turned it into. He loved Maria from the time she came to live with him and cared for Brandon as well he never believed that Brandon truly betrayed the family.
Bear Walken
Voiced by: Ryūzaburō Ōtomo Beau Billingslea
Gender: Male
Bear Walken had been a close friend of Big Daddy since the beginning of Millenion and he became a extremely efficient and good sweeper for the family. He trained Brandon Heat to become a sweeper as well. He is the father of Sherry Macdowell-Walken who is the wife of Harry MacDowell. He chooses to protect his daughter over the family though he feels guilty about the decision he regrets nothing.
Bob Poundmax
Voiced by: Chafurin , Doug Stone
Gender: Male
Bob Poundmax rose through the ranks of Millenion with Brandon and Harry. After Harry's is named head of the organization Bob is named as one of the Big Four under Harry. He becomes a superior in order to save his life but only after Lee had it tested on himself.
Balladbird Lee
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu Steven Blum
Gender: Male

Balladbird Lee was given a second chance by Harry after he was caught to be a spy for his brother. Harry convinced him to turn against his brother and stand by his side as he rose to the top. He is later turned into a Superior in order to test the technology before using it to save his best friend , Bob Poundmax's life.

Bunji Kugashira
Voiced by: Fumihiko Tachiki Lex Lang
Gender: Male
Bunji Kugashira was originally hired to kill both Brandon and Harry but after Harry showed him proof of the organization who hired hims disloyalty joined up with Millenion in order to rise to the top with Harry and Brandon.

Gungrave a third person shooter game developed by Red Entertainment and published by Sega it was released on the Playstation2 platform in Japan on July 17, 2002 North America on September 16, 2002 and in United Kingdom on November 29, 2002.

Anime

Gungrave ( October 2003 - March 2004)

Gungrave the anime adaption written by Yousuke Kuroda and directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru the Madhouse Studios and began October 6, 2003 and ran until March 29, 2004. On July 3, 2008, Geneon Entertainment and Funimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute select titles in North America after Geneon ceased distribution of their own titles in October 2007.
