Leiji Matsumoto never tires of finding new ways to present his concept of heroic manhood through his cast of character archetypes. It saves having to draw anything new, after all. In GF Frank Harlock Jr., a former pirate with a predictable resemblance to Captain Harlock, arrives with short samurai sidekick Tochiro in the lawless Wild West. They are looking for a missing clan of Japanese immigrants and a traitor, Wild Utamaru, who betrayed the settlement of Samurai Creek and with it Tochiro's family. Facing sex slavers, bandits, corrupt lawmen, and the unfair contempt of a world that is happy to rate tall, elegant, drop-dead-sexy men like Harlock as heroes, but mocks short, fat, miserable heaps like Tochiro however brave and clever they are, the two friends team up with a lovely mystery woman and blaze a dangerous trail along the Gun Frontier. Notable from other Harlock universe stories insofar that Harlock often seems more like Tochiro's sidekick than vice versa. V
