Overview

Hello, everyone and welcome to the Weekly Guilty Crown report! I'm Taka, a teammate of KuroNekoXIII (Kuro for short). After Guilty Crown has given the spotlight to two of Funeral Parlor's heroines ( Ayase and Tsugumi), Shu and Hare have a special episode this week that takes the series back to its roots, war with tears and rage.

Plot

Ep. 15: Confession: Sacrifice - "Kokuhaku: Sacrifice" (告白:Sacrifice)

Shu is trying figure out which to choose, Yahiro's Void Ranking System or something else to avoid discrimination everyone. Yet, Hare comforts him and confesses that she loves him. When Souta goes out to prove he is not weak, he endangers Hare and the others.

Will Shu be able to save everyone's lives?

Verdict

Beware of Spoilers!

Good

Hare's death is Shu's crucial point of change
Hare's death is Shu's crucial point of change
  • This is one of the most saddest episodes because another major character dies in this story, Hare Menjou. After her love confession to Shu, she dies while trying to revive him.
  • Shu's change is very dramatic after Hare's death. He is no longer the kind king that Hare dreams of. Ironically, he becomes more like Gai. After he gives Souta a beating he deserves, he tells everyone with this quote:
  • "I was wrong. Kindness is pointless."

  • Hare's origin story is revealed.

Who to Blame?: Shu is very indecisive which causes Souta to go over there and endanger students. Shu's character have so many flaws. He's weak, shy, and indecisive. Now, he has seen a loved one died in his arms. He has truly lost his innocence.

It's up to you to decide. Souta is a dumb friend, but Shu takes all responsibility since he is going to be "king."

Bad

Rape of Inori
Rape of Inori
  • No tribute to Hare Menjou. Some animes like Sket Dance do a compilation of the character. I think both Hare and Gai deserve a tribute. The Euterpe song would definitely fit Hare's death. "Silent night" brings the chilling atmosphere of war.
  • Comparing to Gai's episode where he dies, Hare's episode is not rushed. Everything goes along with the flow.
  • Shu's treatment of Inori is downright appalling. It looks like rape. In fact, Shu breaks his promise not to use his friends as tools. Poor Inori. I thought this series is heading towards a romance, but I was wrong. Looks like tragedy will fall upon this series.

Overall, this episode gets a five out five because it's not rushed and shows dramatic character changes in Shu. Plus, this episode is a stark contrast to the other two episodes due its mood. Guilty Crown is finally getting more darker and mature.

Tribute to Hare Menjou and Quotes

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

I like Menjou because she doesn't have much flaws. She's always kind. Some people call her the Orihime of Guilty Crown because she has big breasts and heal. Yet, I find that ludicrous and that statement a bit condescending to Hare. Hare truly sacrificed herself to save Shu, she fights to save everyone, and she confesses her feelings to Shu. It takes a lot of courage to do that.

Memorable Quotes

  • Hare's Confession:
"And I love that you don't go around declaring things."
  • Hare's Origin Story: "Hey, Shu... Have you ever read a picture book called The Kind King? The king was really kind...He gave everyone money... and land...until finally... the country was gone.
  • Hare's Origin Story cont.: "You're like that king, Shu...the way you lose out because of your kindness...You know what? I think you're going to be a great king. So...
  • Hare's Last Words: "Shu...I'll give you... my..."
  • Shu: "I was wrong. Kindness is pointless."

I see the bitter irony behind Hare's words. Shu is not the kind king anymore. The way he treats Inori and Souta like tools is evident of his change.

Shu has lost his innocence. (Check out the Loss of Innocence page)

May I ask you to move this to Guilty Crown's Anime forum page? I have no idea why it went to off topic. I tried to submit it with links to several pages, but I forgot to fill in the title field. I think that title field made the links disappeared.

I have to be careful next time. Thanks! I'll work on Beelzebub for the team.

Thanks for the shout out, but your wrong about Shu acting more like Gia, though we don't get to see this fully until the next episode. Gia commanded respect from his followers by earning it, and returns that respect in kind. Shu, on the other hand, demands respect and forces if from his followers though fear, and rather than returning that respect, treats them as you said, like tools, mere objects that are expendable unless they meet his needs at the moment. Gai's followers look up to him as a great and noble leader, while Shu's followers look down at him, as a tyrant.

Great job Taka! I can see the amount of work yo put into the report :D

As for the Gai and Shu comparison, true, Shu does give off the vibe that he'll be like Gai, but as LB states, Shu ends up going the wrong direction. I wont go into too much detail so I wouldnt spoil it for you.

Overall, this episode gets a five out five because it's not rushed and shows dramatic character changes in Shu. Plus, this episode is a stark contrast to the other two episodes due its mood. Guilty Crown is finally getting more darker and mature.

Totally agree with this point. This is the episode that marks the turning point of the anime, I believe. Not much humor comes up anymore, and the plot is much more mature and serious.

Who to Blame?: Shu is very indecisive which causes Souta to go over there and endanger students. Shu's character have so many flaws. He's weak, shy, and indecisive. Now, he has seen a loved one died in his arms. He has truly lost his innocence.

I think it is Shu's fault to be honest. He's supposed to be the president, right? So he should man up for the position. If you're an indecisive leader, you will not succeed because you wont be able to gain the trust and support of your followers. The fact that Shu promised Souta that he wouldnt create the ranking system, then he'd go on and do it - its like a stab in the back. In the next few episodes, you'll see how Souta and Shu's friendship becomes....not pretty. I feel bad for Souta, he's an innocent and straight-forward guy and a great friend.

I like how you pointed out about the tributes. I also have troubles finding tributes to the characters of Guilty Crown. That's unfortunate since the anime has amazing footage.

Shu's treatment of Inori is downright appalling. It looks like rape. In fact, Shu breaks his promise not to use his friends as tools. Poor Inori. I thought this series is heading towards a romance, but I was wrong. Looks like tragedy will fall upon this series.

The first thing that came to my mind here was: RAPE! Poor Inori, to be treated like that, its hard to imagine she'd ever still love Shu. But remember how Inori told Shu to "use" her...right? But you're right, Shu did break his promise, and that marks the beginning of it.

Great quotes Taka! And great job with the Menjou Hare page and Loss of Innocence page. Keep it up partner!

@lordbane666:

No problem! Oh, I see your point with Gai and Shu. I didn't see it clearly. Gai is better than Shu, but I still hold him accountable for how he treated Kyou. I have to watch the next episodes.

I can't believe Shu is going to be a jerk in the series.

@KuroNekoXIII:

Thanks Kuro! The next episodes sound exciting. I was searching episode 12's credits for Gai but nothing.

So far, this series had killed off three girls and two guys: Kyou, Hare, Gai, Mana, and Dan Eagleman.

Questions

  • Where did Shu's mother go? She can't be at GHQ.
  • Who is "he" that Shibungi is referring to?
  • There should be a Void to resurrect someone. I can imagine the Hare fans are rioting.

You guys are way ahead of me.

@takashichea: No prob! :D

I think all of the answers to your questions are in the episodes to come :P Your last question is intriguing, I wonder if there is a resurrection void out there. We'll have to see.

Yea I looked for fan videos for Gai, but couldnt find a good one. Hopefully people start making them soon.

EDIT: I got a question that's driving me insane!!! I wonder what Shu's Void is? I get the feeling that it wont be revealed until the end of the series, and it will probably be a big asset to the series' finale.
