Introduction to the Image Moderation Tool

The Image Moderation Tool lets you help decide which images become a part of AnimeVice. Anyone can use this tool, transforming into image moderators, and can vote on approving or disapproving an image. Those images that get enough Approval Votes become part of the wiki section of the site, on the other hand the ones that get enough Disapproval Votes do not.

This isn't an official guide. It is a guide written originally by two frequent image moderators at GiantBomb and now AnimeVice, with the hope that other people find out about tshe Mod Tool and how it is used. Also, it is incomplete, but by publishing it now and listening to any input people may have, we hope to correct any mistakes or inaccuracies and in general make the guide better.

How do I get there?

The mod tool is available from any page, on the top left of the screen, under Users. Select Mod Images and you'll reach it.

Users -> Mod Images
Users -> Mod Images

What do I get for doing this?

The answer to this is really simple: nothing. No points are added to your total, nobody will even know that you modded some images, except maybe those people that frequently use this tool. A count of sorts is kept of how many images you have moderated, but so far this has no consequence. There was talk about giving special profile settings according to how many "moderation points" (images moderated) you have... but nothing has materialized. However, none of this should matter...

Think that you are the image gate for AV. You will help accept nice images, reject poor images, redirect images to their correct place... You will help AV fill with nice images from users.

What do I do here?

There are a few sections on this page, we'll discuss them one by one, staring from the most important one.

Approving / Disapproving / Skipping an Image

Will you Approve, Disapprove or Skip this image?
Will you Approve, Disapprove or Skip this image?
In the middle of the screen you will see the image that some user uploaded and wants to add to some page on AV.

Notice the 3 buttons below the image: I approve of these edits, Skip to Next Image, I disapprove of these edits. If you thing this image should become part of AV you click on Approve. If you don't click disapprove. If you are unsure, just choose Skip. What criteria do you use to approve or reject? Well, this is where the Rules come into play.

The Rules - Guidelines you have to follow for Approval or Rejection

The Rules
The Rules
These are what we call, the "official rules". Images that meet these criteria are "bad images" that should be rejected. They are:
  1. Are too small. You can be less strict on non-screenshots.
  2. Include a watermark from another site (IGN, Gametrailers...etc)
  3. Are attached to more then one platform. (Example: PC and Xbox 360 both)
  4. Create a new gallery that is not needed or poorly named
Let's discuss them one by one, as each is important:

Rule 1: Images can't be too small

Of course, this is a judgment call, and totally subjective. You should think of the following, in our opinion: Can you see the image clearly enough? If it is and image of a character and you have difficulty distinguishing his / her features of find yourself squinting at it, it is probably to small.

Rule 2: No watermarks

First of all, what are watermarks? Watermarks are symbols / graphics overlayed on top of an image, in many cases "marking" an image as coming from a certain site. AVs own images will be watermark-free, and the intent of this rule is to make the images accepted to also be free of them. Sometimes images will have an URL (an "address") on them, instead of a symbol, but if for example they are the home page of a fan art artist they should be allowed. [Editor's note: Must confirm with a moderator, as I was told this at GB but may not apply here...]

Rule 3: No more than one platform

This rule comes from Giant Bomb and it doesn't apply to AnimeVice, so, let's discuss the next rule... (If you really must know what this rule reffers to: Screenshots taken from games can't be taken from, say, the PS3 and the XBox 360 at the same time. It was taken from one or the other. Even if the games are "the same" on each platform, the screenshot was taken form a single platform.)

Rule 4: Images should make use of the existing galleries if possible and if a new one is really needed it should be written correctly!

There are certain galleries that exist by default and they should be used. If none fit, then users can create their own. Make sure the gallery name is correctly written, and if it isn't it is enough reason to disapprove.

Other Very Important Guidelines

No nudity in fan art images - Only in official art and screenshots

Mahoro is watching you!
Mahoro is watching you!
Nudity in the wiki is only allowed if it is official art from an anime / manga company or a screenshot from an anime. No photoshopped images (altered originals) showing nudity are allowed, nor in fan art images. If you an unsure if an image showing nudity is official art or a screenshot, it may be best not to post it and research better or ask a moderator.

Unwritten Rules - Common-sense guidelines that we think should be followed

Below the image, you can see to which galleries an image will be added, or (much less frequently) from which gallery an image will be deleted. There are a few unwritten rules that should be followed here...

Images should be added only to a gallery that fits

The galleries this image will belong to.
The galleries this image will belong to.
Below the image, in the mod tool, you'll see to what galleries a user is trying to attach his image to. If they don't fit to that gallery (say, a screenshot being added to a Concept Art gallery), an image can be disapproved. The user can re-submit the image to the proper gallery. If images were allowed to go to any gallery, then there would be no point in keeping different galleries in the first place. You would see a gallery called Cosplay, only to find screenshots in there, or something else. Be careful that sometimes you may find an image where a user tries to add an image to all available galleries. This is an error or an attempt to gain more points, which should both be disapproved.

Images that only go to All Images are fine

Anime image that is added to a page goes to an "automatic" gallery called All Images. The user can't select this gallery. However, if they don't choose any gallery after uploading an image, it will go to All Images only. Users should try their best to use an available gallery or create one that fits the image, but if they don't it should be approved anyway if they don't break any rules. Al least the image will be a part of AnimeVice and can later be added to a gallery by any user.

New galleries should indicate what kind of image it is

Don't allow the creation of galleries named after the character or anime page. A Shana gallery inside the Shana character page, for example, shouldn't be allowed, in our opinion.  Think about the kind of image it is. Is it a Wallpaper (should go to a Wallpapers gallery), a manga scan (Manga Scans could be used, if the Manga gallery isn't there already), a screenshot from an anime (Anime Screenshots, Anime Screencaps), art from the character designer or from some magazine (Official Art)?, etc.

Rejections are never cool

It is sad when an image has to be rejected, and the user will probably be surprised by the rejection. So, we should try to make sure that the user knows why the image was rejected...

Comments as to why an image was rejected

Try your best to leave a comment under the image as to the reason for a disapproval. Under the default notification settings that comment will reach the uploader and he / she will probably take note of your comment and take it into account in the near future. Or, the uploader might reply and provide you with information that may change your mind towards your negative vote.

Think back to when you had less than a thousand points... would you have liked to have an image rejected without having any idea why?

A Simple Tool - but so much more to say about it

However, as an introduction this hopefully will do. A more complete guide will be available in the near future, with more tips for both the uploaders and the image moderators. Topics included in the guide, for example are: How to determine the real size of an image, Determining from where an image is being moved from, Taking Good Screenshots, and many others.

We hope this mini-guide was of some help to you.
