It's a.d. 220 as the Han Dynasty of China disintegrates into three warring states. The last Han emperor hands his throne over to the son of his protector, Cao-cao, who becomes the ruler of a fragment of the former empire known as the Kingdom of Wei. Two other former generals set up their own states in the West (Shu-Han) and South (Wu). Liu Bei, who claims to be a descendant of an early Han emperor, fights to bring a measure of liberty and justice to the people and ensure good government.

Based on Luo Guanzhong's novel, itself relatively faithful to actual historical events and one of the most important texts of Chinese literature, along with Journey to the West and Suikoden. The story was given the full fantasy-legend treatment by Shinei Doga in an effort to grab audience share with lots of battle action, while doing its best to present costumes, architecture, and known historical fact as accurately as possible. It was so popular that they made a new version in 1985, and followed it up with Romance of Three Kingdoms II-Heroes Crowned in Heaven (1986). Mitsuteru Yokoyama's Romance of Three Kingdoms (1991) retold the story as a TV series, drawing on the manga retelling of the original by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, also known for Giant Robo and a manga Suikoden. The 1992 movie version by Enoki was released in the U.S. as Great Conquest: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with narration by Pat "Karate Kid" Morita. Once again the producers made much of their return to the historical record for details of design and architecture, while focusing on the battles in order to capture theater and video audiences.
