@takashichea: Also, I am in total agreement with you on the opening theme. The ED is good, but, to put it in perspective, when me and my friend were driving to our college to take our calc final the other day, we had this song on repeat to keep our spirits up.

Sonata has another cool transparent PNG.

@Homer_Slobotnick:

Yeah, I love how it's so upbeat.

@Homer_Slobotnick:

Gintama is a unique Shonen series that has a complex genre. Some of its arcs are full of action and carnage while some of its arcs are focused on slapstick and parodies of other anime series and Japanese culture and politics.

Here's a synopsis written by the Gintama Wiki editors on Anime Vice:

In Gintama, Japan has been conquered by aliens from outer space called the Amanto. The city of Edo (Tokyo, before 1868) has been transformed into a weird mish-mash of traditional Japanese culture intermixing with futuristic alien technology as the country appears to have mostly accepted the rules of the Amanto. Several samurai rallied to fight them off in a brief rebellion, but in the end they were unsuccessful, and the Amanto ended up banning all swords in public.

Gintama focuses mostly on the "Yorozuya" (the Odd Jobs Trio), consisting largely of the silver-haired ronin Gintoki Sakata, glasses-wearing Shinpachi Shimura, the incredibly strong alien Kagura and her giant pet dog Sadaharu. In this version of Edo, they simply live paycheck to paycheck doing everything from fighting villains to dressing up in costumes, even though some folks occasionally try to use them to rekindle the great war against the Amanto.

However, the story rarely focuses on this, and instead is often filled with one-shot gags and tons of references to other media or Japanese history.

Edit:

One more thing, I want to add. It's hard to understand some of the jokes especially the cultural and politics. Usually, MohsinMan99 explains the jokes to me.

@DocHaus:

I was thinking of the same thing, and it's no wonder it feels like Gintama. I'm glad to see you're here. I thought you loved the anime since you worked on the manga wiki series page.

I had mild interest in this and meant to check it out but never got around to it. Perhaps I will. I think Funi was supposed to be streaming this. Have they started yet?

@sickVisionz:

I'm not sure about the dates or is it a simulcast.

They already have 2 episodes online at Funimation. Here's the link.

I read volume 1 of Binbogami Ga! today. They covered chapter 3 in episode 2, and now this episode covers chapter 2.

@Sonata:

She watches too much Naruto. :)

@Sonata:

I find Funimation hard to navigate. I wanted to know when they aired Binbogami Ga! Is it tomorrow? I can't believe they cram like 60 pages in one episode.

Why are you up so late?

@takashichea: I believed it aired in Japan today, and Funimation should have it tomorrow....I thinkXD

I get off work pretty late, and I am usually wide awake. I don't start drifting off till abut 3 A.M :)

I added Mimoji and Sakura Ichiko's measurements to their wiki pages. Though, it's bit perverted of me.

@Sonata:

I should be sleeping for school. Anyway, I can't remember the exact quotes for this cool scene.

I see you're a god of flatness. My size is F for fun.

Someone needs to track all the references made to other shows in this anime

@Homer_Slobotnick: @takashichea explained most of it, but my expanation is that Gintama is the closest you'll get to The Simpsons with anime. A bunch of one-shot gags interspersed with the occasional dramatic moment story (see: Benizakura arc). The good news is that you can jump in at almost any episode and you won't be too lost on the characters because the story isn't really that continuous. The bad news is that several jokes assume that you have a knowledge of Japanese history and pop culture (consider their audience), so while you might learn a little by osmosis chances are the jokes won't be as funny over time.

@Sonata:

I already told Oh, I do have more measurements to report.

@Wraith:

Feel free to add any references we miss to the episode wiki pages. It's going to be fun adding these references to the wiki page. I remember I missed a lot for Sket Dance Wikia since I'm not familiar with Doraemon and other obscure anime titles.

@takashichea: Cool I just saw Dekken's list:)

@Sonata:

Awesome! Did we missed any other references in episode 3?

Oh, I loved this episode because it shows that Sakura did not have one what Keita have, a family. I find Sakura a bit fickle. She can be selfish, but she uses her fortune to help others sometimes.

@Sonata:

I haven't even watch To Love Ru. You should go add it. I feel like a noob since I haven't watch a lot of anime. That's why I need you, Sonata.
