Overview

Good Luck Girl!, known as Binbō-gami ga! (貧乏神が!, lit. "This God of Poverty!") in Japan is a comedy manga series with supernatural themes created by Yoshiaki Sukeno. An anime adaptation was produced by Sunrise and directed by Yoichi Fujita and Tomoyuki Kawamura.

Plot

Sakura Ichiko is a young girl who is well endowed and blessed with athletic skills, wealth, intellect, and beauty. Some would say that she is extremely lucky, and that would be correct. Turns out that a god made a mistake and gave Sakura ridiculous amount of energy known Happiness Energy, mythical power that gives luck to people. Sakura's Happiness Energy is too much for normal human being, so much that she is actually absorbing other people's luck, causing imbalance of Happiness Energy and bringing misfortune to others around her. Momiji, the Japanese god of poverty and misfortune, is sent to suck out some of this energy in order to restore the balance of karma in the world. Sakura however doesn't cooperate and decides to fight against a god. Sakura and Momiji clash between each other as opposites. Which girl will emerge victorious?

Characters

  • Ichiko Sakura (Voiced by Kana Hanazawa) - She's the main character who is extremely lucky and rich, only because she was received with incredible amount of Happiness Energy by accident. Despite how lucky she is, she is lonely deep inside and sometimes selfish.
  • Momiji (Voiced by Yumi Uchiyama) - She is the god of poverty and misfortune, Binbogami, and she is the hitman sent to extract Ichiko's Happiness Energy. Despite various tools and plan, she ends up failing because Ichiko's Happiness Power is too strong, making her lucky and avoid dangers.
  • Keita Tsuwabuki (Voiced by Kouki Uchiyama) - He's a poor young student who is seen sleeping during class most of times, only because he works overtime to support his siblings who are abandoned by their parents.
  • Momou Inugami (Voiced by Hiro Shimono) - He's a dog god who prefers transforming into a chihuahua, and he gets masochistic when tormented by women.
  • Bobby (Yoshihisa Kawahara) - He's the perverted, traveling Buddhist monk.
  • Ranmaru Rindou (Voiced by Haruka Tomatsu) - Manly girl who dresses as male, specifically male delinquent. It was revealed later that her father is karate master, and he raised Ranmaru, or more like trained her, to be the next heir of his karate dojo.

Manga

The manga series is serialized in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine. So far, It has a total of 13 volumes.

Anime

The anime series aired in Japan on July 4th, 2012 and it is streamed on Funimation for audiences outside of Japan.
