A popular Japanese anime studio, and the first to release anime simultaneously in Japan and North America.
Gonzo is one of Japan's best-known anime studios, particularly in recent years as they have begun releasing anime simultaneously in Japan and North America via CrunchyRoll, BOST, and YouTube.
History
Gonzo, Inc. was officially established in September 1992, and it became the primary wholly-owned subsidiary of GDH (Gonzo Digital Holdings) when that company was established on February 9, 2000. In 2002 Gonzo merged with Digimation K.K. In 2004 the company went public and was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers Index.
Works
Gonzo primarily worked on games in the 1990s, and produced its first anime OVA-- Blue Submarine No. 6 --in 1998. Its first TV anime was Gate Keepers in April of 2000, and the company's biggest hits to date have been Vandread (2000), Hellsing TV (2001), Burst Angel (2004), G.I. Joe Sigma 6 (2005), and Afro Samurai (2007). Gonzo is well-known for its own original works ( Romeo x Juliet, Dragonaut) as well as its adaptations of manga and novels (Rosario to Vampire, Special A).
Simultaneous Releases
In April of 2008 Gonzo became the first Japanese anime studio to release a series simultaneously in Japan and North America. In fact, they launched two such series: Blassreiter and The Tower of Druaga ~The AEGIS of URUK~. These series were first announced for CrunchyRoll, where they could be watched streaming for free and downloaded for a donation (the minimum amount was $0.01, but was otherwise left up to the user). They were also released on BOST (for pay) and YouTube (streaming-only, free).
Gonzo continued this plan in July of 2008 by releasing Strike Witches, on the same three sites but with a different pay structure on CrunchyRoll-- to download the episode you had to pay $3 or $5 per episode. In October of 2008 Gonzo's series Linebarrels of Iron was also released on the same three sites, with CrunchyRoll's pay structure now at $1.99 or $2.99 per episode for downloads.
