Originally created as something of a specialty YouTube for anime and other Japanese media and consisting primarily of illicit fansubs, in 2008 CrunchyRoll established deals to legally distribute some popular anime series simultaneous to their Japanese airing. In 2009 they will remove all fan-submitted content.

Crunchyroll is an an amazing success story in the American anime industry! It came out of nowhere less than a year ago spewing out free pirated anime like some sort of Russian mafia front, and now instead of getting sued, it's securing difficult licenses from conservative Japanese producers.
