Generally associated as an American franchise, G.I. Joe was also popular in Japan, and even had manga volumes on top of the well known animated series.
GI Joe is a franchise based on a Hasbro toyline, many of the series main cast of characters originated in the Marvel Comic books however. The first series in the franchise, G.I. Joe A Real American Hero was animated by three separate animation studios over it's long run, Sunbow, Toei, and DiC. Subsequent series followed, G.I, Joe Extreme was the first sequel series, followed by G.I. Joe Sigma 6, which was the series true anime installment, with other series only having a partially anime background. The next installment was G.I. Joe Resolute, a series meant specifically for a mature audience, and finally G.I. Joe Renegades, the most recent series, which was designed to be enjoyable to children and adults alike.
The franchise has also had several animated movies, a direct to VHS live action film, and a multi-million dollar blockbuster live-action feature film.
In addition to the G.I, Joe Marvel and IDW comic books, there have additionally been manga series, US domestic adaptations of the Joe manga are simply titled G.I. Joe The Manga
