A series of supernatural tales, with a mysterious young man and a gifted young woman investigating.


This franchise is made up of two light novels both written by Fuyumi Ono as well as two manga adaptions both written by Shiho Inada and an anime adaption derected by Rei Mano. The Manga adaption titled Akumu no Sumu Ie: Ghost Hunt which began in 2012 is still on going.


Mai Taniyama is staying after school telling ghost stories when in walks Kazuya Shibuya a 17 year old paranormal researcher who is not only highly intelligent but also a narcissist which gives Mai the idea for his nickname "Naru" which eventually is used by all the people who come to work for Shibuya Psychic Research center (SPR) a ghost hunting business Managed by Kazuya.

Mia felt something was wrong with Kazuya the moment she met him and didn't like him but later during a run in with Kazuya's assistant which ended in his assistant Lin Koujo being hurt. Kazuya tells Mai she must take the place as his assistant and work off the camera that was broken.

They are soon joined by others Hōshō Takigawa a 25 year old Buddhist monk, Ayako Matsuzaki loud mouthed 23 year old Shinto miko(priestess), John Brown a 19 year old Catholic Priest from Australia and Masako Hara a 16 year old spirit medium who is well known in the media circles that the Principle hired to discourage rumors of haunting's in an old school building.

After the case is over Mai is offered a paycheck and a job.

The series follows Mai, "Naru" and the others as they investigate ghost, possession and other supernatural cases using there individual supernatural and natural talents.


Mai Taniyama (谷山 麻衣)
Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka Cherami Leigh
A 16 year-old orphan and first year high school student who becomes involved with SPR after an accident involving a camera and Kazuya's assistant causes her to have to work for the company to pay off damages.
Kazuya Shibuya (渋谷 一也)
Voiced by: Yuki Tai Todd Haberkorn
A 17 year-old manager of the Shibuya Psychic Research center he is highly intelligentand somewhat narcissistic in his attitude.
Lin Kōujo (林 興徐)
Voiced by: Ken Narita J Michael Tatum
Lin Kazuya's assistant who dislikes the Japanese though Mai eventually grows on him. He often works alone and through the night.
Hōshō Takigawa (滝川 法生)
Voiced by: Kenji Hamada Travis Willingham
25 year old hakkaisou, a Buddhist monk who has left his position at the headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, Mt. Koya. He joins the team to debunk rumors of an old school building being haunted.
Ayako Matsuzaki (松崎 綾子)
Voiced by: Masami Suzuki Colleen Clinkenbeard
A 23 year old self-styled Shinto miko (priestess) ("self-styled" because she was not raised in a shrine). She is loud and somewhat obnoxious. She was also hired to debunk rumors of the haunting.
John Brown (ジョン·ブラウン)
Voiced by:Nobuhiko Okamoto Jason Liebrecht
A nineteen-year-old Caucasian Catholic priest from Australia who learned to speak Japanese with a Kansai accent. Though young he is powerful with his incantations.
Masako Hara (原 真砂子)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya Jad Saxton
A 16 year old spirit medium with a popular television show and has the ability to channel the deceased. She can feel the spirits unlike all but Mai despite other claims.
Osamu Yasuhara (安原 修)
Voiced by: Kosuke Okano Eric Vale
A 3rd year top-ranked high school student and president of his school's student council. He was originally a client of SPR but later came to work for them part time.

Light Novel

Akuryō Series (1989 - 1992)

A light novel under the title Akuryō Series was written and illustrated by Fuyumi Ono and published by Kodansha beginging in 1989 and continued until 1992 the series consisted of 8 volumes.

Ghost Hunt (October 2006 - March 2007)

A light novel adaption titled Ghost Hunt Series which was also written and illustrated by Fuyumi Ono was published by Kodansha begining in March 1994 and ran until April 1994 the series consisted of 2 volumes.


Ghost Hunt (July 1998 - September 2010)

The first manga adaption written by Shiho Inada was published by Kodansha begining on July 7, 1998 and ran until September 30, 2010 the series consist of 12 volumes.

Akumu no Sumu Ie: Ghost Hunt ( 2012 - On Going)

A second manga adaption titled Akumu no Sumu Ie: Ghost Hunt which was again written and illustrated by Shiho Inada as well as published by Kodansha began in 2012 and is still on going.


Ghost Hunt (October 2006 - March 2007)

A 25 episode anime adaption titled Ghost Hunt and directed by Rei Mano had its original run from October 3, 2006 until March 27, 2007. The series has been licensed by Funimation for the US and Canada.
