In 1969, Japanese schoolboy Shun Ukiya is co-opted into AEGIS (Alien Exterminating Global Intercept System), an international organization founded to hold off invading aliens. These creatures feed on human selfishness, possessing human hosts and transforming them into rampaging monsters. They can only be held off by operatives with "Gate" powers, young psychics whose latent abilities are awakened by trauma or powerful emotions. GK is an artful combination of the Cold War paranoia of The Invaders with the desperate battle and psychological angst of Evangelion and the large female supporting cast of Tenchi Muyo! The show was previewed in a manga version by Nadesico-designer Keiji Goto. The six-part video series Gate Keepers 21 (2003) picks up the action 32 years after the original, with the AEGIS organization largely out of action, surviving only as a forgotten underground group. Invaders, however, still present a threat, and one that gains extra power as old enemies are resurrected. Ayane Isuzu is an AEGIS member who gains the assistance of a ghostly helper in a quest to reform the remnants of AEGIS and to save the world, again.
