Overview
A game for the dead, to come to life. A chance to atone for past mistakes, or watch the carnage flow free. Aliens are roaming, and with the aid of futuristic weapons these players must fight them off or be destroyed trying, under the instructions of a device called Gantz. Kei Kurono must fight alongside his friends to win his freedom and his life back through this game.

Publication History
Gantz first premiered in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump in 2000, and is still ongoing under the magazine, with chapters being released approximately once every fifteen days. The first tankobon volume was released by Shueisha on December 11, 2000, with 31 volumes currently available.
The author has taken hiatuses after the completion of each arc, or "phase". The first hiatus ended on November 22, 2006, with the release of the first chapter in phase 2. The second ended on October 1, 2009, with the release of the first chapter of phase 3.
Several spinoffs of the original Gantz have also been created. Gantz/OSAKA tells the story of the Osaka team. Gantz/Nishi details the life of the character Nishi. And Gantz no Moto has the author explaining the details of his entrance into the manga industry, and the various influences for his work.
In North America, Gantz is licensed by Dark Horse Comics, who announced their acquisition of the license during Anime Expo on July 1, 2007. The first volume was published on June 25, 2008. While the first three were published quarterly, the continuing ones will be released on a bimonthly basis. Currently, they have released 18 volumes of the series, with the next volume being released on October 11, 2011.
Characters
Kei Kurono He was hit by a train alongside his best friend, which led to him being selected by Gantz. In the beginning of the series, he is perverted and arrogant, but soon takes responsibility for the group. He's also physically able and very skilled.
Masaru Kato
Kei's best friend, who was also hit by a train. Masaru is a guardian of sorts to people, earning him a reputation for being a fighter.
