Nice to see the use of Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series. My friends and I still play Yu-Gi-Oh from time to time and we just say "Hey, you wanna play some children's cards?"

Anyway, I kind of think the whole game anime and manga is rather silly. Like the whole life or death thing is so funny.

I loved the crap out of Beyblade when I was a kid. I thought the show was pretty cool and I even used to play it with my friends.

@InfiniteGeass: I missed out on Beyblade, but I've always been rather curious about it.

Really I stopped about 4 years ago, the TCG had got to the pretty broken level back than and having watched part of a tournament recently my suspecisions were confirmed that time has only served to make even more game breaking exploits and combinations.

Many gaming animes really do feel more like over the top advertising for a new game series. Hell, it works. Just look at what it does for Pokemon.

I actually liked the Yu-Gi-Oh series. With that anime. You might even be able to pick up a new stragety.

@N15PCA:
I think AHR mentioned digging the show on the podcast a couple times.

The intro music is fine, but the background music on for the entire episode is quite annoying.
 I want to listen to Gia talking, not someone play with the drum simulator in GarageBand.

Good episode though.

YES!  We are running low on library photoshops (make us moar plz:  http://www.animevice.com/news/vicequest-the-anime-vice-library-of-photoshops/3206/) so I threw this week's background together myself and took the opportunity to incude my two favorite anime comedies, Excel Saga and Shin Chan.

Glad there are other Excel fans out there on AV.  I wish it had a bigger following in the US, and by that I mean I wish there was more good english language slash fanfic.

Man, I want them to use that one. Also, I like the one where you change the shape of the portraits too.

Re: Games -

I draw a distinction between legacy-games-used-as-concept  (King Me! Checkers, the Anime) and games-introduced-in-series, like Yu-Gi-Oh.  (and these are also separate from adaptations of current video games -- Pokemon being the main offender)

Game as both story frame and concept are fine, but things like Hikaru no Go & Saki are different from 'proxy fighters' like Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Pokemon, and even my own beloved personal fave Angelic Layer:

In the first case the dynamics of the main character playing the game are important;
In the second case, it is the dynamic between 'trainer' and 'fighter' (however these are determined in story) that not only are more important than the game, but also in the worst case allow the MC to transcend or break the rules of the game on a frequent basis whenever it is convenient.  I mean, really: does Pikachu defeat any other pokemon, not matter what?

If the term isn't too obscure, maybe 'proxy fighter' ("spawn of pokemon" if one prefers) should be the subject of one of these 3-minute expert segments.
