The Iron Dragon Slayer of the Phantom Lord Guild, he eventually joined Fairy Tail and has proven himself as a loyal member.
Little is known about Gajeel before his introduction in the series. He is the first dragon slayer that Natsu encounters, and they start right off the bat with an intense dislike for one another. As a member of Phantom Lord Guild, Gajeel carried out his orders to destroy the guild hall of Fairy Tail. He claims no particular love for Phantom Lord, only that he thinks they are strong, and thus worthwhile of his attention.
Following Master Jose 's defeat and the dissolution of Phantom Lord, Gajeel joined Fairy Tail but was not received kindly. Most of the members eyed him with suspicion and distrust, especially Natsu, who outright rejected him. But despite his unpopularity, Gajeel has proven to be a loyal member of Fairy Tail. Not only did he work as a double agent for Makarov to find Ivan 's location, but he also fought to save the entire guild in Edolas. In recent events, Gajeel declared himself as a Fairy Tail mage before wiping out Yomazu and Kawazu of the Grimoire Heart guild.
Gajeel Redfox is created by Hiro Mashima as a supporting character. He first appears in Fairy Tail volume 6 and Fairy Tail episode 21. His Japanese voice actor is Wataru Hatano while his English voice actor is David Wald. In Hiro Mashima's notes, he stated that Gajeel's name is based on Kajiru, the Japanese word "to gnaw." In addition, the sound effects of his eating is "gaji gaji." (Source: Volume 27's About the Naming of the Characters 2)
Gajeel is an tall and intimidating muscular young man around the age of Natsu . His hair is a heavy metal, long, black hair and his eyes are small and red, with crimson irises and slitted dark pupils; he is normally seen glaring. He also has three scars on his right arm.Fairy Tail tattoo is located on his left arm, just below his shoulder and it's black. He usually wears a wing-like sleeve on his right arm (right above his Phantom Lord tattoo) and various body piercings, usually in sets of three or five. His usual outfit consists of a shabby black tunic (that exposes his muscled biceps) with studded edges, studded wristbands, and studded boots (somewhat resembling Punk ), white pants and a pair of brown gloves.
He doesn't seem to care at all about Fairy Tail, and seems to think that Phantom Lord is a stronger and more worthwhile guild. Gajeel bears his Phantom Lord symbol marked at the top off his right shoulder (note the same place were Natsu has his Fairy Tail emblem). When he was first introduced, he was depicted as cold and apathetic, and not at all above injuring his allies if they irritate him at even the slightest, as seen when he iron-clubbed a fellow Phantom Lord Mage who was praising his abilities, all because the latter was disturbing his metallic meal at the time. But at the same time, he appears completely dedicated to whatever guild he is affiliated with. In fact, he ignited the Fairy Tail-Phantom Lord Guild War (under Jose Porla's orders) mainly because, as long time-rivals, he believed that the Fairy Tail Mages were enemies, and as a Phantom Lord Mage, Gajeel sees it as an obligation to "protect" his own guild, even if it meant starting an unprovoked attack against Fairy Tail. Upon his recruitment to Fairy tail, this sense of comradeship did not change in the slightest; he even went as far as reprimanding Laxus (whom he admits to be a more powerful mage than he is) for attempting to kill Natsu with his lightning, when they are supposed to be allies.
Gajeel might not have been the strongest member of Phantom Lord but thanks to his rather ruthless and bloodthirsty nature he is easily one of the most feared. He uses his Iron Dragon Slayer magic to destroy the Fairy Tail guild by crashing multiple pillars of steel into it. He then puts the icing on the cake and makes it an official declaration of war when he sneaks up on and attacks the Shadow Gear team (made up of Levy , Droy , and Jet ) and then pins them to a tree with the Phantom Lord symbol written on them. After this, Fairy Tail has had enough and they storm Phantom Lord to take revenge. Elfman attacks Gajeel and battles him, but this battle is interrupted right off the bat by Natsu who runs in to duke it out with his fellow dragon slayer.
The battle is halted when Makarov is put into a coma and Fairy Tail retreats. Phantom Lord then takes Lucy hostage because of her family's wealth, and when they threaten to destroy Fairy Tail with their mobile guild cannon Natsu and his team come to the rescue. When the guild stops moving, Natsu is able to fight freely and he and Gajeel duke it out. Gajeel powers himself up with his iron armor so that Natsu can barely even damage him, and to top it off Gajeel is able to eat the metal shrapnel created by the damaged building to power himself up further. This gives him a huge advantage against Natsu, but when Lucy is able to summon Sagittarius he is able to create some fire for Natsu who eats it to power up as well. They make one final attack against each other and Natsu just barely manages to beat Gajeel down, although he collapses soon after.
After the battle is over Natsu ask Gajeel about the dragon that trained him. He tells Natsu that like him, his Dragon master Metalicana disappeared with no warning seven years ago
While plenty of people had their concerns about his appearance, Makarov approves of Gajeel's application to join Fairy Tail (though he seems to have some reservations about his intents). Shortly afterwards, during a show, he attacks Mirajane. The punch line, of course, is that he merely wanted her out of the way so that he could sing for the guild in her place, though the end results were not well received. Later, Gajeel is confronted and attacked by Shadow Gear, with the exception of Levy, and are soon joined by Laxus. During his assault, he sends a bolt in Levy's direction but Gajeel takes the hit with his iron magic. As he limps away to his mission, they realize that Gajeel didn't even try to fight back.
With the battle of Fairy Tail in full swing, Gajeel decides to join in on the fun to settle the score with Laxus. But similarly to Natsu, Fried's enchantment prevents him from leaving the guild. After helping Natsu free Erza from Evergreen's spell, she promptly punches the two for using inappropriate methods. Shortly after, Levy manages to dispel the enchantment, allowing both of them to participate in the tournament. Gajeel is then seen communicating with Ivan, using a magic that takes the form of a shikigami, who intends on destroying Fairy Tail. Following their conversation, Gajeel shows up in the cathedral where Natsu is seen fighting Laxus. After deciding to help Natsu, their teamwork seems to payoff as both put up a good fight. But Laxus' powerful attacks weakens Gajeel too greatly, forcing Natsu to finish the battle on his own. In the final moments, Gajeel saves Natsu by using himself as a living lightning rod (by using his iron dragon slayer to transform his arm into a metal rod). With Laxus' attack deflected, Natsu uses this opportunity to defeat him.
In the guild hall, both Natsu and Gajeel sit bandaged up from head to toe. As Laxus walks past them to visit Makarov, he is stopped by Natsu who says something but is muffled by the bandages. Somehow, Gajeel understands and translates what Natsu's saying. Later, he's seen with Ivan, who explains that he implanted lacrima into Laxus' body to give him dragon slayer powers. After a brief warning to keep his identity as a spy a secret, it was revealed that Gajeel was in fact, working as a double agent for Fairy Tail (as shown when he hands Makarov a piece of paper with information about Ivan's location)
As the strongest member of Phantom Lord under Master Jose, Gajeel's strength is immense. With his strength, Gajeel single-handedly defeated Shadow Gear, the "back-bone" team of Fairy Tail. His overall speed and reflexes are also impressive, being able to intercept attacks like Laxus' magical bolts and reaching Levy in time to save her from a double-team ambush of two Grimoire Heart Mages. His strength alone was also able to nearly destroy the first Fairy Tail guild building, and he nearly defeated an S-Class level mage (albeit not recognized as such at the time), "Salamander" Natsu, in combat. Like Natsu, Gajeel was taught by a dragon to manipulate a particular element into his fighting style. In Gajeel's case, the dragon Metalicana taught Gajeel how to use Iron Dragon Slayer magic. His skill in hand-to-hand combat rivals Natsu's, and with the support of his iron scales, he easily shifted the tide of battle into his favor for the majority of their fight. Even without his Dragon Slayer abilities, Gajeel has consistently proven himself to be one of the more resilient characters in the series: when he was confronted by team Shadow Gear after joining Fairy Tail, he was able to shrug off the combined attacks from Jet and Droy without retaliation and, in the the anime, only resorted to finally summoning his metal scales to increase his defense when Laxus tried to attack Levy. During the Edolas Arc, Gajeel used his metal scales to fight Faust's mechanical dragon , where he absorbed extremely powerful blows with little trouble.
Gajeel also seems to know how to use his magic to revert those who have been turned into lacrima back to normal, most likely after being taught to him by Mystogan.
Iron Dragon Slayer ( Tetsu Metsuryū Mahō): Like Natsu, Gajeel knows "Dragon Slayer" magic, which he learned from the dragon, Metalicana. However, his Dragon Slayer magic deals with metal instead of fire. Just as Natsu eats fire to regain his strength, so can Gajeel eat metal to regain his own. His teeth and jaw muscles are apparently powerful enough to gnaw through solid metal with ease, and can devour even the magic-canceling metal of the Dorma Anim. Gajeel's magic seems to deal with producing multi-sized iron rods as well as changing parts of his body into steel. Most of his attacks involve transforming his arm's into hard-as-steel weapons, which he can do at will.
Dragon Force (竜の力, ドラゴンフォース, Doragon Fōsu)
Gajeel can enter Dragon Force which enhances his abilities tremendously while adding metal scales all over his body to increase his resistances to attacks and magic spells.
Iron Shadow Dragon (モード鉄影竜 Mōdo Tetsueiryū)
Gajeel consumes Rogue's shadow magic to enter this transformation. All of his attacks are imbued with shadow magic on top of iron magic. He can transform into a shadow, so he can outmaneuver his enemies and deliver powerful attacks at the same time.
Roar of the Iron Dragon (鉄竜の咆哮 Tetsuryū no Hōkō)
Gajeel can use a breath attack which is a powerful tornado with iron shrapnel to inflict further damages.
Iron Dragon's Club (鉄竜棍 Tetsuryūkon)
Gajeel can transform his arm into a pillar of iron and extend it to deal damage to his foes.
Iron Sword of the Dragon (鉄竜剣 Tetsuryūken)
Gajeel can transform and extend his arm into a double edge sword at his enemies.
Karma Demon: Iron Spiral (滅竜奥義 業魔鉄螺線形 Metsuryū Ōgi: Gōma Tetsurasen)
An anime exclusive technique used in the Daphne filler arc, Gajeel transforms his bottom torso into a iron drill and plows his enemies.
Roar of the Iron Shadow Dragon (鉄影竜の咆哮 Tetsueiryū no Hōkō)
In Gajeel's Iron Shadow Dragon form, he combines both shadow and iron magic into a powerful breath attack. It's the alternate version of his Roar of the Iron Dragon attack with a shadow attribute. He first uses it against Rogue in the Grand Magic Games.
In chapter 212, Gajeel's hand gets stabbed by Yomazu all the way to the elbow then Gajeel breaks the katana by flexing his elbow. Whereas in the anime (episode 102), Gajeel's pillar arm gets stabbed through the hand area. He breaks the katana by changing his pillar arm into his steel hand; Gajeel eats the katana. In addition, Gajeel reveals his iron sword only in the anime.
