Lets talk about immersion for a bit, immersion is the ability for a story of any form to draw you in. If an anime can draw you in completely it can make any thing funny, or scary. Fushigi Yuugi seems like it really wants to immerse you in the story, but completely fails. the story revolves around Miaka YĆ«ki, a junior high student studding for entrance exams. One day she agrees to go with her friend, Yui Hongo, to the library. there they find a book by the name of The Universe of the Four Gods. when they start reading it, they are both sucked into the world (Yui is soon shot out of the book). Miaka learns that she is the priestess of Suzaku and as such she must find the seven Suzaku Warriors to summon Suzaku. the anime builds itself up as a action comedy. while it starts out funny as it goes along the jokes are thinned out pretty quick, after one point there are practicality no jokes (and the few there are don't seem right for the situation). as for the action, it boring, practically all the battles in the anime are over in about 30 seconds. none of witch could be considered epic in any sense. With out the immersion factor either, i found it hard to care what happened to any of the characters.

In Conclusion
the fights are boring, the comedy is little and far apart, and it's hard to really care what happens to the characters
