Two brothers travel around the world seeking the cure to the physical afflictions they suffer as a result of their experimentations with alchemy in this popular fantasy adventure/drama series.
The two wander around the world seeking the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary alchemical item that is said to allow an alchemist to convert one item to another while ignoring the rule of "equivalent exchange," a law of alchemy that states that in order to obtain something, something else must be lost -- i.e. you cannot use alchemy to create something out of nothing. Arakawa's manga debuted in Square Enix's Monthly Shounen Gangan in 2001 to rave reviews and is still running in the same magazine. It was adapted into an anime -- which contains its own canon and its own ending -- in 2003, which also aired on Adult Swim in the and became extremely popular. A movie, Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala, was developed as an ending to the anime series. This film, like the latter chunk of the anime, is a completely original conclusion to the series that is different from the direction the manga has gone into. A light novel series based on the manga has also been running, with six volumes to date.
