 Maybe SHE'S the fool for allying herself with bulging, volatile powderkeg that is the metro zealot Scar?
 Maybe SHE'S the fool for allying herself with bulging, volatile powderkeg that is the metro zealot Scar?

Whoever this “fool” is, he’s been brought up couple of times in these titles. First, he was advancing. Now, he’s struggling. Who could he be? At times, some characters have acted misguidedly, but the only who’s been outright foolish so far is Lin. Him getting on the Alchemical Kids’ bad side wasn’t the best idea and, then, willingly submitting himself to Greed’s influence was downright stupid. Though, if he does eventually reassert dominance of the body, he may prove to actually be quite brilliant (because he probably would’ve keeled over if he’d resisted.)

Soooo… if not Ling, then who else? Who’s the fool?

Maybe it’s an “in too deep” moment, but I got some special satisfaction out of Ling’s entourage getting put in their place by the doctor. One of my big pet peeves is when people interrupt others' business with their own personal drama and act like they've been given license to be rude. I’m still not sure what exactly these two chicks’ deals are, though. I don’t think they were ever clearly established. I get that Lan Fan is his bodyguard, but what’s May’s relationship to him? Is she his consort? He’s child-bride-to-be-by-arranged-marriage? I’m still not sure. All I know is that it served them right getting thwacked with those frying pans.

 Maybe the little panda is the fool?
 Maybe the little panda is the fool?

I was impressed by how much tension was achieved just through dialog in that scene in Bradley’s office. I love it. They know he’s the bad guy, and he knows that they know, but they’re still keeping up appearances. Although, it goes to show how strange this show can be that May’s hiding inside Alphonse is the ticking timebomb there. Bradely just asks Al to wait, stabs him, inspects the blade curiously and then walks away, like he was just wiping an eyelash off him.

Well, I guess you can get away with that if your the Fuhrer.

Watch this episode, “Struggle of the Fool,” below and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Ling and May are essentially half-brother and half-sister, due to the Emperor being a horndog with numerous women, each of whom represent a different clan who are all vying for the top spot.  Ling is the 12th prince and May is the 17th princess.  Ling mentioned this whole situation back in episode 15 I think.  And May mentioned some of her story in 25.

@rubberluffy: It is good to be the emperor!

Basically, is Ling becomes Emperor, then he gets a wife from every clan. So if he wins, May becomes her concubine.

Wow... was it really that many episodes ago. He's been on the show for a long time.

I've read a few of these articles concerning FMA Brotherhood now and it does seem to be somewhat different from the first anime. I never picked this up since the storyline is basically the same (or so I understood), but there is a lot stuff going on that I do not remember from the first anime.

Having seen the first one and the story still being...somewhat fresh in my mind - should I still watch this?

I really didn't love the first anime though. It had some brilliant stories that evoked really strong feelings, but I no longer enjoy stories that are that depressing. I never want to see the episode again where the guy turned his young daughter into a homonculus. I remember watching Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen, Saishuuheiki Kanojo, Kimi ga Nozomu Eiein and etc. and loving them - but these days I mostly stick to more lighthearted animes.

So maybe I answered my own question there... unless one of you can convince me this is worth picking up regardless?

@dunchad:
FMA: B hasn't been remotely similar in any way to the 2003 anime since it's 14th episode/dealing with Greed.  The mini-arc with Nina does exist in Brotherhood but is much shorter, due to it being really short in the manga, and also has a different ending to it.  This is the manga animated.  It is also much better than the 2003 series.

@dunchad:
Everyone that isn't evil gets a
ending, even the dead ones. And it doesn't feel tacky.

I say that, but really, you stay to see Scar and King Bradley beat the living shit out of each other towards the end.

NOT SPOILERS. Promises of awesome.

@Tom_Pinchuk:  Do I look like a mod to you?

@rubberluffy:  Fine, fixed.

@SamJaz:
I still think that counts as a spoiler >_<
Some people might care enough about it.  Then again, I don't think anyone really new to the series (except Tom, of course) reads the W&L :(

@SamJaz: Wait, what? where the hell does that come from? She's his half-sister! Or are you lying?

@ninjadude853:
They're royalty. Male Heir that becomes Emperor gets a female from every clan. May's from a small one, so she'll be the lucky girl.

@SamJaz:  She's not the only girl in her clan, and i seriously doubt that the women then send to the emperor are under ten years old

@ninjadude853: You live in a pleasant state of ignorance. That's a good thing.

As it is, people would send a four year old girl to marry an emperor if that was the best they had to offer. Why do you think she is working so hard to get the Philosophers Stone?
Post by ninjadude853 (464 posts) See mini bio Level 12
@SamJaz: She's trying to gain enough favor from either the emperor or whoever succeeds him to protect her clan from annihilation.

And I am fully aware that very young girls are often married off, but it wouldn't happen in this case because May is Ling's sister. Xingese alchemy is consistently stated to be used primarily for medical purposes, in such a way that implies that the Xingese are very advanced in medical knowledge. And medicine is a field that goes hand in hand with biology, and while Xingese understanding of biology is nowhere near ours (considering the fact that the FMA world appears to be somewhere in the early to mid 1900s tech wise). It stands to reason that they at least know enough to understand one (or both) of two things: Inbreeding is bad, and pregnancy in children is very dangerous. THEREFORE, They wouldn't send his eight year old sister to be knocked up.

Oh, and (SPOILER ALERT) the epilogue heavily implies that May marries Alphonse.

@SamJaz:
1) When?
2) Good point.
3) Another good point.
4) Having favor doesn't automatically mean you're in charge, it just means that the emperor likes you.
5) How do you add in the spoiler warning?
