Worth Watching?

I noticed that Full Metal Panic is up on Netflix instant and was wondering if it's any good. I'm not necessarily a fan of the high school settings in anime but I'll let it slide if it's worth watching.

@Afroman269:
It's pretty good for a mecha/school aime

Eh...it depends if you're looking for more humor featuring a young stoic commando or not-quite-sensical mech military action. If it's the former, then look for Fumoffu! If it's the latter...then you can probably find a better series.

@Afroman269: I thought it was super meh when I saw it, but I saw it under the impression (given to me by a misleading Netflix description) that it was going to be some action spy show about an agent going deep under cover to take out a terrorist.  Technically it is that, but I would have described it as a comedy/romance show that just so happened to have a spy in it rather than an action show.  If you go in wanting high school harem, you'll probably enjoy it more than I did.

I thought the first series was good, not great, though i will admit it's been quite a while since i saw it. However i've heard that the Full Metal Panic : The Second Raid is much better than the first series.

I enjoyed it well enough but there are some noticeable inconsistencies and opportune conveniences in the plot.  A good point is the voice acting in the dub is very similar to the original Japanese.  Is it my favorite giant robot show? No but it's worth a couple of evenings if you're in the mood for a light comedic action show.  The opening song, "Tomorrow" is a persona favorite of mine, too.

It's one of the most overrated shows in my opinion. It's incredibly angsty and is really slow paced, especially for a series such as this. I hear The Second Raid is much better, but I've yet to find the courage to sit through it.

I recently finished episode 4 and I think it's safe to say that I'm going to have to pass on this. Ya you're right about it falling into a comedy/romance category.......I'm just not into that kind of show and the high school setting just adds more to the turn off. I watched until a "serious" moment happened like the kidnapping in episode 4 and even then, I just couldn't get interested. I might have liked it somewhat if I was younger and saw this when it came out.....I don't think it aged well.

Thanks for the responses though, guys.

Full Metal Panic is one of my favorite anime, so I'm sad you didn't like it. It is absolutely understandable though, as it's a mix of high school romance/comedy and action, and some people might get turned off by that, especially if they're looking for pure action.
Too bad you couldn't get into it :/

I'd recommend it to anyone who does like a romance/comedy/action combo though, just because Sousuke is an amazingly funny character, and the plot later gets really serious.

@eldiax: I'm not necessarily looking for pure action, I'm more of the type that likes the more serious kind of animes and the ones that avoid most of the stereotypical anime moments. It's why I like Ghost in The Shell and Cowboy Bebop quite a lot and why I don't like Neon Genesis, the movies are somewhat better though. The high school setting animes tend to be chock full of the stereotype anime moments and I was getting that vibe from the couple of episodes I watched of FM Panic.

@Afroman269: Have you tried watching Samurai Champloo and Darker than Black? That might be something up your alley, especially Samurai Champloo, since it's by the same director as Cowboy Bebop.

But yeah, you definitely won't be able to like FMP, since the goofy humor continues, especially in the second season (Fumoffu!) which doesn't have any action at all.
