Tohru Honda sets up camp in the backyard of a wealthy family and finds herself suddenly entangled in their lives, which include a unique curse.

An orphaned high school girl named Tohru sets up camp (literally) in a forest area, only to learn that it's the backyard of the wealthy Sohma family: specifically two cousins, Yuki and Shigure. Wary though they are of non-family members, they feel sorry for Tohru and are anxious to have someone to clean their home, so they let her stay with them. However, she quickly learns about a unique trait of the Sohma family: thirteen members are afflicted with a curse that causes them to change into one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac (plus the cat, who was left out of the Zodiac because the Rat tricked him) whenever they're hugged by a member of the opposite sex.
