Franky

Origin

Franky was born as Cutty Flam to a pirate and grew up as one of the apprentices of Tom the Builder in the Water City Water 7. There he learned everything he knows about ship building and spent his free time making powerful weapons on his own little ships. That was until his ships were used to frame Tom for a crime. When he tried to stop the sea train carrying Tom, he was run over and severely injured. Barely alive, he washed aboard an wrecked iron ship and used the part to rebuild himself as a cyborg. Since he did the work himself, it's only the front half. Being a wanted man by the World Government, Cutty then became Franky. He would go on to meet the Monkey D. Luffy and fulfill his dream of creating a great pirate ship, the Thousand Sunny. Sailing along as the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates, Franky is determined to see that the Sunny really becomes the ship of dreams when Luffy becomes King of the Pirates.

Creation

Franky is one of the main characters in the series One Piece that was created by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. Oda described the crew as a family unit, Franky was described as the father, since he was the oldest member to join, before Brook. Oda would go on to say that he sees Franky being similar to a bull.

Franky's first appeared in One Piece Volume 35, CH. 329 "Enter "My Name is 'Franky'", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 233 " The Pirate Kidnapping Incident and the Pirate Ship Waits for Death!". He has had two separate voice actors for his adult version and another for his childhood, Cutty Flam, version told in the flash back story. His standard Japanese voice actor is Kazuki Yao . The teen version of Franky was voice by Junko Noda . For the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is done by Patrick Seitz. Cutty Flam voice was done by Greg Ayres.

Franky is a character who's style is to wear as little as possible and he even takes pride at the idea of being called a "pervert" for how he dresses. A style of character who seems to care little for what others think of him. The hairstyle of Franky is similar to that of Jim Carrey in his role of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective(1994). This is not unusual given Oda's taste in parodying celebrities for characters.

Franky is similar to Nico Robin , since he was first introduced as an opponent of the crew, but would alter join. He was a boss of a gang of delinquents he gathered from around Water 7 and gathered them to form the Franky Family. They were dismantlers who would steal ships to break apart and sell for parts. If the crew were pirates with bounties, they were given up for the money. He's more often seen wearing wild Hawaiian-style shirts, a small speedo, and sunglasses. A flamboyant character who likes to put his arms together to strike a pose and shout out "SUPER!". Written on each shoulder is "BF-36". This stands for Battle Franky, the designation he game to all his home made battle ship.

He's represented by the color light-blue, and smells of cola. This is because he's a cyborg character who power source is cola. Since he actually created himself as a cyborg, only the front part of his and his arms are mechanical. The rear half is still flesh and blood. Build within each arm are weapons such as cannon, bean shooters, and his fist become a flail.

After the two year time gap that follows the crews greatest defeat against Bartholomew Kuma at Sabaody Archipelago and the events of the Whitebeard War at Marineford. Franky was sent to Mechanical Island , the birthplace of Dr. Vegapunk. There he found the lab of Vegapunk and many of the plans within. Though he was severely damaged in an explosion he accidentally casued, he used parts he found to give himself many major upgrades.

After two years, he is seen near sunny saying they will get on to the journey sooner.Robin arrives at sunny and finally is greeted with Franky Dance by Franky.

Powers and Abilities

Franky is a powerfully built man with a height of at least seven feet, and he is the second tallest member of the Straw Hats. He is a cyborg. His forearms are relatively enormous while his biceps are comparably small. He has brightly-colored blue hair and blue star tattoos on his forearms. His choice of clothing usually comprises of a speedo, which causes people to call him a pervert, and an open loud Hawaiian shirt that has a large golden chain necklace around his neck.

Franky has two Jolly Rogers. The one on the right has been used by Toei Animation, and the one on the left was drawn by Oda in a SBS.

One Piece - Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura (2008)

Being a relatively recent addition to the crew, Franky has only had a few appearances in the One Piece movies based upon the series. His first movie appearance was in the film remake of the Drum Island story where Chopper joined the crew. One Piece- Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura(2008). In this film the crew already has the Thousand Sunny ship and Nico Robin is also among the crew.
