Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer
I don't usually throw out a whole post just for something coming out on Blu-Ray in Japan-- for obvious reasons (importation isn't an option for most) –but I just can't help it this time. Partially it's because of my own fondness for Urusei Yatsura, which aired subtitled on my local PBS station when I was younger on Sunday nights. Partially it's out of devotion for my former boss, the legendary Rob Bricken, who is an incredibly dedicated fan of the show.

And the third and final part? Because the Blu-Ray release is Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer, which was written and directed by another legend: Mamoru Oshii. The film was originally rejected by Rumiko Takahashi and most Japanese anime fans because it's such a deviation from the series' usual style and tone, but it's always been a hit with most American fans and has done reasonably well in Japan (which the BD release should more or less prove).

So! If you were going to spend $50 (pre-shipping) to import some hi-def anime, I'd suggest this as a possibility. Unfortunately, it has no English subtitles-- which is especially a shame since it does feature an audio commentary that includes Oshii himself.

What's the point of putting some of these older shows on bluray? Most of them there'd be honestly no real distinguishable difference between a regular DVD version and a Bluray version unless they shot it on at least 32mm film... otherwise no amount of remastering is going to help it.

I don't know if this particular film was or not, and considering it's Urusei Yatsura, that's actually a possibility, but still... this seems a little overkill to me.

HeeroYuy: I've wondered that too, but Adam Sheehan (FUNimation rep) swears up and down that even older cell animation like Dragon Ball Z looks way cleaner in high-def. So I'd give it a shot.
