Depends. In game Bulbasaur is a good starter because grass is strongest to a far amount of types so he will be a good all around Pokemon to keep out as your first summon. However there are other grass types that can fill the same roll just as well, plus some are dual types so they make even better all around Pokemon. Squirtle is a good one, but i tend to only ever have one water Pokemon on my team and that was just for him to be the dam HM whore. Back when the game had like 3 different water hm moves you needed to get around it didn't make much sense to pick him because you would ether need to make him useless by bogging him down with all the HM moves you needed to get around the world, or waste a 2nd slot to a water Pokemon to take them all. This of course weakens your team over all as that is one less slot to fight a certain type.
That's why i always went with charmander as my first. When he hits charazard and gets the three best fire attacks i usually round him out with fly. His fire attacks are always so powerful that i usually kept him as my starter as he could kill just about any Pokemon of any type in 1-2 hits. I would of course switch him out if i came across a water, rock or ground type.
As for the other starters, well they all sucked compared to the original three. So they can just go away.

Totodile. The only real problem early on with him is the second gym but you should be training up a flying type (likely Hoothoot) by now. The thing is once you get to Feraligatr the moves you can teach to him via level up and TM and the sheer attack power (HP and defense are pretty good to speed could use work) he has will make the Elite Four a breeze and provide a diverse move pool of attack moves with, which to confront an opponent.
