Ooof. Look, most shonen shows walk a delicate balance between being, shall we say, “young at heart” and “only for kids.” Most often, I like to picture some meter where the needle swings at different degrees between those two measures - - and holy crap, is that needle just spiking into the “for kids” area with this episode.

Certainly, I can enjoy material that isn’t specifically targeted at my demographic - - or at the least project myself into the headspace of somebody in that demo and then try to meet the show halfway - - but it was impossible to do that this time without feeling incredibly silly. Like, we’re talking “bowl-cut second grade yearbook photo” embarrassing here. I’m sorry, but there’s no way I can write about the plight of a little doggie named Xuxu and the various good or bad people around him who dress like sheep without it feeling as ridiculous as a serious, grad school dissertation on “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.”

And all of that makes Luffy’s assorted threats of “kicking ass” rather jarringly out-of-place. Last time, I opined about how it’s only a few arbitrary details that often separate entertainment aimed at kids and adults. Indeed, last episode felt just as sophisticated in its plotting and gauntlet of conflict as any grown-up thriller. Well, this one’s flipped the equation something fierce. It’s like somebody took a show from Sprout and peppered in some random dashes of kickass. The experience is about as awkward as spooning a bowl of Lucky Charms that’s got some drop of hot sauce in it. It’s just fundamentally disjointed.

I feel like the dub cast understood this, too. The one actor’s Adam West impression (to complement Buggy’s Mark Hamill impression, of course) just screams, “Listen, I realize this is ridiculous - - let’s just get through it with a wink or two, all right?

Hate to say it, but this was probably the worst ONE PIECE episode I’ve watched. Just a chore to get through.

Watch this episode, "Desperate Situation! Beast Tamer Mohji Vs. Luffy!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

I actually always liked this episode/plot-point. The East Blue Saga is all just to show how different Luffy and his crew are from the rest of the pirates terrorising the sea. I like the fact that Luffy's willing to go out of his way just to help a dog. The Buggy arc is all about different kinds of treasure, so I think it fits pretty well, even if it comes across as kind of silly.

To be fair I did get into One Piece a long time ago, so I pretty much was a kid when I saw this episode, maybe that's why I can handle this kind of thing. The whole series is filled with stuff like this though.

haha. Out of curiosity i thought i'd take a glance and see just how "bad" this episode really was and yes this one was crap, totally forgettable and just bleh overall.

This is my first time seeing these earlier episodes in dub and i have to say (like i've said before) the English dub still makes the show sound more korny than it is. Sorry Funimation i know your doing your best but it just does.

This however does not excuse the bad episode at all, to be fair it just reminds me why i never recommend this series in english dub....also....just like with any long running shounen, watching these earlier episodes one at a time is.....commendable to say the least - i just couldn't do it. I have to get acquainted to these longer running stories as quickly as possible to see if its worth a long time investment and in these cases it means doing an initial binge session. Somewhat like your fellow co-host did on a related box set (ironically lol).

For the purpose of these write ups i think we all understand it is meant to be a one episode a week thing and since your doing the show from both ends (no innuendo hehe) i don't think anyone will complain

Anyhow

It's funny cuz even with your DBZ write ups you can appreciate the bad pacing / episodes in retrospect more and see the bigger picture but when your taking the initial journey with a long show a bad / slow start can lose viewers quickly and i feel alot of the newer shounen like Fairy Tail for example learnt from this and kept things poppin and more interesting from the get-go

Alot of people didn't get into OP because of its slow start which is a major shame as the payoff is more than worth it.

I guess only the pure of heart rode the initial tide through to the greatness soon to follow

Btw i think someone did mention last week your numbering these episodes wrong - this was episode 6 - just an fyi

I waaaaas going to leave a comment to the effect of, "You just don't understand how great One Piece is! Stop writing these if you don't get it!" (Don't actually stop writing them, I love seeing how someone new to One Piece reacts to these early episodes) But yeah, this is about as bad as it's going to get in the entire series. So congratulations, you won't have to put up with something quite this bad again.

maybe you guys missed the point, that store was that dog's treasure. luffy only connects because he knows how it would be if someone did that to his hat he got from shanks. which (wink wink) um we will see a lil hat damage coming up. but i suppose if could be silly from other points. But to me it shows character. that luffy will go out of the his way for the "little guy" in anime and not give it a second thought.

I honestly don't watch the OP anime...it's horrible, too much filler and even canon episodes have way too many characters kinda just, standing around gasping and looking shocked at how powerful others are.

I know, I read the manga and was astounded by the difference in quality.
