Now, this is an odd piece I stumbled upon and asked Anime Vice intern Eric to translate: apparently the variety show Sukkiri!! is collaborating with McDonalds Japan to put on a manga exhibit, and both sides are contributing works by some of Japan's biggest names.
Sukkiri!! is pulling out 18 works-- all caricatures of hosts Terry Ito and Koji Kato --by Monkey Punch (Lupin III), Mimei Sakamoto (Nippon no Mimei, Harvey and Etsuko's Manga Guide to Japan), Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe), Takao Yaguchi (Tsurikichi Sampei), Kazuo Umezu (The Drifting Classroom), Kiminori Wakasugi (Detroit Metal City), Tetsuo Hara (Fist of the North Star), Fujiko Fujio (Doraemon), and Moto Hagio (A,A').
McDonalds is keeping their end of the bargain with 20 works by Monkey Punch, Tetsuya Chiba, Machiko Satonaka (Pia no Shouzou), Kenichi Kitami (Oyaji Cafe), Kenichiro Takai (Anta no Dairinin), Big Joe (Ippon Bocho Mantarou), Moriyoshi Murano (Dagger of Kamui character design), Uno Kamakiri (Kanashimi no Belladonna Assistant), and Yoshimi Kurata. These works are from the 2007 Mega Mac campaign, if you remember it.
The Sukkiri!! works are apparently already available on the show's official website, and all the works will be on display at the Shimbashi-Hibiyaguchi McDonalds in Tokyo. The one pictured here are the caricatures by Monkey Punch.
Can you imagine McDonalds doing any kind of cultural display in North America (Happy Meal toy displays nonwithstanding)?
