Welcome everyone, here is Anime Vice's Top 20 Manga Series of 2013! This poll was started on January 30, 2014 and ended on March 15, 2014 (See Top 10 Manga of 2013 Voting Project). With you guys and gals' help, I was able to record 145 manga series for the voting sheet. Out of 145 entries, only 77 manga series got voted. 28 Vicers had voted, and submitted a total of 108 votes. This is your community's results! I was surprised by the results.

I was asked by many folks to start a manga poll contest since sickVisionz's top anime poll had an incredible response. Last year, we had about 50 voters. (See Top 10 Best Anime of 2013!) 2013 was the first time the community had voted for their top manga series. Another reason I wanted to start the poll was curiousity. I put some extra information to see where the community loves the most:

  • Are we leaning towards a particular manga publishing company?
  • Is weekly manga more popular than monthly manga series?
  • Are we predominantly Shonen manga fans?

I'm sorry for being a bit late with the results. With Screened closing down on March 14, 2014 and the Spring 2014 Guide in the works, it's a bit tough managing this poll and making the results. It was fun seeing the results. I put in about 5 hours today: working on tallying the numbers, making the list below, and double checking the math. If you want to see the Gdoc spreadsheet, here is the sheet.

1. Bleach
Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a shinigami (spirt of death) and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy.

2. Attack on Titan
Humankind is down to just a few thousand people who live in a city surrounded by three concentric walls. The walls protect them from their enemies, the ravenous giants known as the Titans. The Titans appear to have only one purpose: to consume humanity.

3. Claymore
A Claymore - a female warrior named for the sword she carries - travels from medieval village to village to destroy Yoma, monsters who disguise themselves as humans and who are almost impossible to kill. Claymores are half-humans, half-demons who willingly transformed themselves by mixing their blood with monster's blood. Claire, nicknamed silver-eyed killer, is such a powerful Claymore, she can slay a Yoma using only one hand. But she must constantly struggle to keep from becoming a monster herself.

Weighted System

For those who are wondering about the weighted votes and why I used them. Since our community is small, raw votes won't help decide the winners. As you see from the data, the most votes for a manga series was 9. There were many ties. I had to go back and figure out how my teammate sickVisionz carry out his calculations. After talking to him on Twitter, he told to me to used his formula. Here's the formula from I need your help for the Best Anime of 2012 votes! thread. I couldn't use the numbers since this poll uses 10 slots instead of 5 slots.

Since you guys have an eye for aesthetics, let me know if this blog needs any finishing touches or changes to the formatting. I tried to make the top 20 list have manga covers. Going with the table took so much time. Plus, the manga covers distorted the tables.

Thank you everyone for voting. Please share your comments. It means a lot.

Happy Claymore did well.

Why is Pupa here

Of the 20 manga series here, I haven't read Claymore, Assassination Classroom, Pupa (I only seen the anime), Kingdom, Medaka Box, Vinland Saga, One Punch Man, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Mysterious Girl Friend X. I thought Kodansha and Viz Media were like Comic Vine's DC Comics and Marvel equivalents. I was surprised most of the series were from Viz Media.

Out of the 20 manga series, only 3 series that ended recently got in the top 20: Medaka Box, Beelzebub, and Deadman Wonderland. Only Medaka Box and Beelzebub never got licensed. I wait for the western publishers to get these licensed.

@hitsusatsu11:

What's your take on Claymore?

@taichokage:

Good to see you're here. I was shocked that Bleach got in. I thought either One Piece or Naruto would take first place. Toriko and Magi scored pretty high, beating Naruto.

Good question. I was waiting for someone to ask that. , I remember who is a big fan. Care to explain why this series got so much attention? :)

@takashichea: I like Claymore very much. I like the story, the unexpected twists, character interaction and action.

@hitsusatsu11:

Out of the top 5 manga series, Claymore stands out to me because the main character is female. Cool, thanks for the recommendation. I'll add to my Vicers' Recommendation list. Hopefully, I get a chance to read or watch the anime. I do these blogs to show that our folks do recommend shows to one another.

@takashichea: It looks great, actually! I don't see anything needed to be fixed.

Post by Destinyheroknight (10,190 posts) See mini bio Level 21

I surprise Fairy Tail is so low and Dragon Ball isn't on the list

Also, I'm miss the vote. I kind of sad that 20th century boys or Hunter X Hunter didn't make it (I probably would vote for it one of them). I think I'll start reading Claymore, I hear good things about it. Really hope the US Shonen Jump pick it up, I know the perfect series to replace

Anyway, I'll try to vote next time

@Bigheart711:

I wanted to make it more user friendly. I felt like I dumped too much data. I remember back in 's 2011 article, Anime Vice's Top 2011 Anime.

Maybe, I'll add short synopsis to promote manga series to folks who are curious about trying a particular show. Reel in some comments and promote the discussion more.

I'm surprised that Seven Deadly Sins and Assassination Classroom made the list.

@Destinyheroknight:

Don't worry, I didn't vote either. I actually forgot to vote because of Screened's site closure. For next year, my goal is 50 voters. I have to work on promotions and how to promote it. For this contest, I wrote on so many people's walls. I didn't tweeted as much because I thought people in Anime Vice wasn't big on social media.

I would have voted for these manga series in order or ranking. I can't remember the exact ranking.

  1. Sket Dance
  2. Attack on Titan
  3. Deadman Wonderland
  4. Beelzebub
  5. Fairy Tail
  6. One Piece
  7. Seven Deadly Sins
  8. Yamada and the Seven Witches
  9. Bleach
  10. Toriko

@ForgottenOne:

That's the power of wiki editing and battle themes. As you can see with the exception of Medaka Box and Claymore, Toriko and Seven Deadly Sins got a boost in popularity because they were promoted heavily by these individuals and key events such as Crunchyroll's simulpub of Seven Deadly Sins in 2013.

Battle Themes: December 2013 Battle Theme by Taichokage, January 2014 Battle Theme by SpeedForceSpider, Battlation Of The Month: Othus12 (March 2014), and Battlation Of The Month: WayBig1010101 (February 2014)

Because we have a small community, things can change really easily. If I cut off the votes in February, Seven Deadly Sins wouldn't be in the top 20. All 5 of the votes for the manga series came in March. It's like a miracle.

It's thanks to you, too ForgottenOne, and DestinyHeroKnight

I sad to see Screened leave, I wish I work on their more

Anyway, I guess this would be my list

  1. 20th Century Boys
  2. Hunter X Hunter
  3. One Piece
  4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  5. Vinland Saga
  6. One-Punch Man
  7. Berserk
  8. Cross Manage
  9. Seven Deadly Sins
  10. Tie between Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail, Soul Eater and Dragon Ball (hard to choose)

Despite the push it got, I'm not too surprised at the 7 Deadly Sins making it. It wasn't a best seller last year but it made 1.4 million sales it's first year, which is impressive for 1 year of serialization only. It's also gaining popularity on streaming sites like Crunchyroll and illegal scanlation sites. That goes double for Assassination Classroom. It almost caught Naruto in sales and it was the highest sold manga with no anime in 2013, beating Bleach, Toriko, Fairy Tail and Gintama and what not.

@takashichea: Pupa was one of the manga that caught my eye and I found it as a twisted yet beautiful work of fiction. The anime butchered the series.

Still have yet to read Assassination Classroom.

Claymore has really been going hard in this arc. I am not sure if this is the last arc or not though.

@LHWKnight:

Pupa was pretty strange. It and Mysterious Girlfriend X broke the Shonen pattern in the top 20. I never imagine it be in the list. I will read the manga as soon as they get it legalized in the states. I haven't read Assassination Classroom yet.

@taichokage:

You should be my business expert. I didn't take into account sales for my Voting Sheet. Next time, I'll put that in, the first volume sales. What's the pattern here. Man, Viz Media dominates this poll.

@Destinyheroknight:

Shoot, I forgot about Soul Eater. It ended last year. I never got to finish it. I heard good things about Vinland Saga. First time I heard was at the Kodansha Q & A Panel at Anime Expo 2013 when Ben Applegate was talking about the hottest manga series for Kodansha.

  • Sankarea
  • Attack on Titan
  • Sherlock Bones?
  • Sailor Moon
  • Vinlanda Saga
  • Fairy Tail

Yeah, the seven deadly sins is doing very well in the manga sales.

It got a nomination for an award alongside One-punch man: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-01-20/10-titles-nominated-for-7th-manga-taisho-awards

Yeah One Punch Man deserves this too. They're about the same age, both coming out later 2012. I Love OPM. With the deliberate Chliche aspects, hilarious outcomes and outstanding art.

@taichokage: I forgot to mention that Nanatsu no Taizai ranked #4 in Japan's Bookstore Employees ranking: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-02-06/japan-bookstore-employees-rank-top-manga-of-2014 2014. One punch man is a rank below at #5th spot in this list. These are recommendations, so I'd say its a considerable success
