That's my story exactly.  Damn I miss Toonami.

My name is not oldschool without reason.  My first anime was on the government run telesion station (ABC) and was in black & white (for 2 reasons - it was made in black & white and colour television was still 7 years away).  It was Astro Boy - the absolute original 1960's version.
At the same time we had other great anime to watch, due to the relative popularity of Astro Boy, with Prince Planet (my all time favourite), Space Ace (not the US crappy show), Marine Boy and the sweetest of them all, Kimba the White Lion.

Space Ace
Space Ace
Prince Planet
Prince Planet
Marine Boy
Marine Boy
I had a marvellous childhood.

I think they still have it,  Just with shows that are more craptastic (Naruto for instance :P)

I'm pretty sure it was Dragon Ball; if not Dragon Ball, it would most likely be Pokemon.

The first two shows I saw that I knew was anime was Akira and the origional Bubblegum Crisis. BGC was also the first tape I ever copied and passed around to people. At the time what made BGC so special was the music and the hardercore plots. Even though it shows it's age I still love the show.

While I did see shows like Speed Racer and Starblazers and Battle of the Planets long before I did not know they were anime.

I would watch Sailor Moon at 7:00 in the morning right before Pink Panther came on.

Gia, it's funny, you and I started out the same way. Unico was the first anime movie I ever watched; I asked my dad to rent it because it had a unicorn in it. I also remember not getting through it all the way because I thought it was too scary. Then it was Sailor Moon all the way which, in the end, led me to Baku_Sensei. Yay end rhyme. :-)
