Not your Favorite Anime, But Your First

I have two "first anime" titles. Sailor Moon is the show I originally fell into the anime crowd with-- its cancellation led me to IRC, and, well, it was all downhill from there (as anyone who's spent time on IRC will get).

But! I watched my actual first anime probably before I was even aware of Japan, let alone Japanese animation: it was called The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, a couple of anime movies based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka (who, by the way, is listed in this database *three* times?). My parents taped it off of Disney and I watched it dozens and dozens of times. Ahh, those were the days...

But I know many of you are relatively more recent to the anime world (and maybe some of you are way more old-school). So what was your first?

My first anime (and don't call me a noob) - was actually the Animatrix DVD. I really liked how each story was done by a different artist and had a completely different take on the Matrix story.

Have you watched the AniBatrix (AKA Batman: Gothic Knight)? It's the same concept (six shorts by different animation studios/writers/etc) but set in the Batman universe instead of the Matrix. It's pretty good.

Wow, totally forgot about Unico (ユニコ). Guess I lied when I said Akira was my first (though technically, it was my first with subtitles and the orig. sdtk). I was all up on Unico way back in the day (don't want to date myself too explicitly here >_<) though I often confused it with The Last Unicorn.

Dragonball Z, you know you all love it too.

I did watch Dragonball Z for a while.  But I couldn't keep up with the daily schedule (on Cartoon Network).  You missed an episode or two and suddenly everyone's on a different planet or Goku would be dead.

orrrrrrrrrr you actually find the time to watch some and the entire episode is just them powering up!

I could never get into DBZ, honestly. Though I don't have any excuse, since I watched Sailor Moon like crazy at the time @_@

DBZ over here as well. Hell, I remember seeing a single episode of DBZ before anything was even being mainstreamed and going like "wow this is awesome." (I think I might've been like 5). Also, it happened to be the episode where Zarbon thrashed Vegeta (my memory scares me). Then once Toonami came onto CN everything was over for me...

Samurai Pizza Cats, but I only saw random episodes since it was before I grasped the concept of a TV schedule.

Either Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon. I can't quite remember.

Either Samurai Pizza Cats or Tekkaman/Teknoman in the early 90s. To me they were just cartoons back then, though. I didn't actually get into anime until I started watching subbed eps of Naruto, .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet (or .hack//DUSK, as we called it back then for some reason) and Read or Die in 2003.

I'm pretty sure I started off with Pokemon. Bye-Bye-Butterfree had me in tears back then.

Sadly, it was probably Sailor Moon.
