My first Anime was Dragon Ball...
Now and Then, Here and There
That is a great anime, underrated in my opinion
one of my favorites
@Sigue: I'm a green hand in this field, but I do like anime and I also like anime cosplay, that's very interesting to meet the people who have common with. this post includes lots of suggestions for the beginners, just like me. XP
Cowboy Bebop and Smurai Champloo
Is there any anime with better graphics than Death Note? I'm actually new to anime since I've seen less than 10 animes but Death Note had the best graph by far... it looked way better than Code Geass, Black Butler, Vampire Knight which ones were made years after Death Note... if anyone could recommend me something with DN-alike graph I would be very grateful (sry for possible language errors:)
So, if I think start friends off to anime, I think Slice of life. If you want to "ease" them into the bizarre world, then first start off with the simple. There are some great slice of lifes out there, but I'll name a few:
Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)
Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Bros)
Great Teacher Onizuka
There's HUNDREDS more good ones out there, but those are just a few great ones.
This will depend on taste, but i can suggest those for the genres i personally like.
For comedy: Gintama definitely takes the cake.
For intelligent/technical anime: Ghost in The Shell.
For Mecha: I'd say Code Geass would b the best for intro (preferred dubbed too). Gurren Lagann is also great.
For great characters & atmosphere: Rurouni Kenshin & Full Metal Alchemist. Trigun & Cowboy Bebop are also great.
For a great combination of numerous genres: One Piece takes the cake. The first Naruto series is also pretty good.
Other great series for those more accustomed to gore & adult language are Bleach, Baccano!, Black Lagoon, Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter.
Bleach, Fate/Zero, Darker than Black & Steins; Gate are also definite great ones!

Welcome to NK
Did you check out the Community Directory: Discussions, Clubs, Projects, Lists, & More!? It has some of the new Fall 2013 shows.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (1st and 2nd Seasons) - Great action, military theme.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Epic Everyting. Robots that breaks all laws of science and logic.
Eureka Seven - More concentrated in drama rather than mech fighting, but the Anime revolves around Mechs.
Code Geass(1st and 2nd Seasons) - Mech action with battle of wits at it's finest, anti-hero as main character.
Mobile Suit and Eureka are really good. From what I have watched so far still fairly new to anime but I am going to check out the other two you named.
^ and kuroshitsuji. many people have that show as their favorite "dark" show, also. and, of course, death note.
for beginners in general i suggest DBZ (DB isn't really all that....its just meh for me) and SAO as some grounds for some action anime. anyone who has looked at those can suggest more like those to you and you can take off from there.
for school anime....its kinda hard to find non-generic ones, but i would suggest clannad (part 1 at least, that was good) and tonari no kaibutsu kun (my little monster). it has a romance in it and if you hate romance DON'T WORRY. i hate romance but this is tastefully done.
if you want mainstream, look at one piece definitely. but that has episodes in the 600s so you have been warned. i don't look at mainstream since they tend to fall away quickly on their rise of fame.
i hope you all don't take that assumption that i am some year-long anime watcher. wished i was though. but nope, technically i have been looking at anime since i was around 12yrs old (17 now) but never really got into it. one year i was on a huge DBZ kick but then i dropped off of it for a reason i'm not sure of. then a year or two went by and i was bored to tears of looking at my dried up DVDs over and over (i dont have TV stations). so i got back into anime around the beginning of this year.
so why does my list look like this?
uta no prince sama
from up on poppy hill
world of arietty
FMA (and movies)
tonari no kaibutsu kun
nobunaga the fool
my neighbor totoro
Sword Art Online
kiki's delivery service
(and those are just the ones i remember watching. my brother assures me i have watched more.)
well, its as i said; i'm not a big mainstream fan, and i wanted to look at as much anime as i could, but i didn't want to be strung up on hundred-episode animes because
1 after you finally finish the long anime, you feel as if you watched a ton of anime, when you actually watched one (and that's not very otaku!)
2. although you plan to look at other shorter anime, but look at the long anime at the same time, what do you do? you end
up watching the long anime the most, and barely any others.
so how will this work?
i watch anime as little as 3 episodes long up to 24-30 episodes. unless it is really good, i look at 50+, but not over 60. besides naruto part 1 (i skipped the filler episodes, which is 129 episodes out of 220, and according to the naruto filler list that is 59% of the show, if my math isn't off.) and DBZ, i haven't looked at another hundred-episode anime since. FMA1 is the only one i have watched that has 50+ sometime recently.
you don't have to check out all these anime, of course, but i assure you, most (like, a LOT) of this list is around 3 - 24 (maybe 26) episodes long. some of them are movies (the ones in bold), which are even shorter.
so that's how i get so much anime to fit into my list. to prove i am not lying, i am in the middle of watching little busters, which is not more than 28 episodes long.
before my farewell, i have one anime suggestion. this anime isn't well known but please, please look at the anime last exile part 1.
it was one of my first animes, and i really know most of you out there will enjoy it. its such a delight, only 26 episodes. my only complaint is that they didn't exactly flesh it out some more, but this anime's art and story is spectacular. please watch!
If you're looking for good quality titles that won't alienate you due to limited understanding of Japanese cultural norms, general mind-fuckery or nods to otaku fandom, here's what I'd recommend:
