Well, I haven’t really posted anything here on Animevice, but I believe a good start would be my project that was started on Giantbomb a month ago. I have been on a quest to find a great movie or series from a genre that I don’t necessarily pay much attention to, which is anime! So far, my project has been successful… though there were some duds. I have been watching a lot of anime based on my recommendations thread, and here are my personal comments and reviews on three anime shows/movies that I watched! Ratings follow the traditional Giantbomb rating scale. I tried my best to keep everything short and sweet.

Howl’s Moving Castle

This Miyazaki film is the reason why I started on this little anime project. Howl’s Moving Castle was very mesmerizing, and I had a stunning and constant curiosity of what will happen next. Just the curiosity of what is on the other side of a magical door was thrilling. There wasn’t really anything disappointing in this anime, except that the ending could have been a little better and more planned out. The atmosphere, the story, the music, the characters… everything about this anime is just great and magical to me. Fuck Harry Potter and his magic words and other garbage, because this is there the real magical shit is at! (By the way, I hate Harry Potter) It is no wonder that Miyazaki is the Japanese Walt Disney that is STILL ALIVE! I look forward to seeing The Secret World of Arrietty over the Pixar movie, Brave, coming out this year. Though Miyazaki did not direct Arrietty, I am still looking forward to seeing it - That there says a lot, because I love Pixar animations. I also look forward to watching Miyazaki’s creations that I missed out on.

Anyways, this was a good starting point for me to find even greater anime. So, it is predictable that my first movie watched will get a good score.

Verdict: 4.5 / 5 - 90%

Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

I watched 2 1/3 episodes in total of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. After the first several minutes in watching the third episode, I just didn’t feel like could watch anymore beyond that point. However, someone mentioned to me to give it another try. So I started Fullmetal Alchemist, which is where I should have started with in the beginning. I watched the pilot, but unfortunately that was it. I have no desire to continue on with this series and giving it anymore chances. The few episodes that I watched could not get my attention, and first impressions on a show or movie is important to me. Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood are just not for me.

Verdict: 1 / 5 - 20%

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro

This movie was interesting from the moment it started. It had good action, rather unusual and strange story, and I had a since of curiosity of what would happen next. Without really spoiling too much of the movie, out of all the weddings I have ever seen in any movie, The Castle of Cagliostro had the strangest one I have ever seen. It was like the blue, blue, BLUE cult from Earthbound was there to witness the forced wedding.

Anyways, the movie was really unpredictable and very corny, and the strangeness of the direction and plot of this movie really didn’t really do anything for me. The twist ending was rather disappointing, but at least there is a chance to where we could see an improved Lupin the Third in the future. The Castle of Cagliostro may be a very quirky and strange movie; however it still was a pretty good even if there is a lot to be desired.

Verdict: 3 / 5 - 60%

Tune in next week to see my reviews on: Tales from Earthsea, Eden of the East + The King of Eden + Paradise Lost, and Origin: Spirit of the Past.

Interesting. Brotherhood is a pretty long series, so if you're not up to it then that's that. That's too bad since it is as epic as The Last Airbender which you did enjoy. The original 2003 version is more thought provoking, but that really doesn't matter at this point. I personally found Howl's Moving Castle to be one of the weaker Miyazaki movies when compared to Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I also prefer My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service but their stories slower paced. That's just a personal preference thing. Kiki and Totoro are comfortable being about the little things. I like that.

I'm pretty sure everything I recommended didn't appeal to you. Plus, I'm fairly certain everything I did was a Japanese audio with English subs. I should have remembered and stuck with English dubs. Either way, I have a hard time figuring out your tastes in these matters. I've got a better handle of your music predispositions than film. I looked over your "Movies that I Like" list on Screened and there is a preponderance of family comedies and films staring a particular actor. Neither are these elements of many anime shows. Well, there are certain voice actors who show up in similar character roles over and over again, but it's not something most people recognize. I am interested to see how all the recommendations pan out for you.

I'm getting My Neighbor Totoro tomorrow.

Sargent Frog and Ghost Hunt grabbed my attention, so I paid attention to you because you took the time to introduce me to stuff you liked! One question though... is xxxholic pornographic or show any nakedness? If so, I really do not want to watch it.

Anime is a new experience for me, so I know that everything will be different than what I like normally. I like trying new things. Keep a look out for my reviews, as I got 4 more blogs like this on the way! If it isn't too much trouble, just PM me on Giantbomb and we can talk about anime! It'll give me something to do rather than thinking about my dad's cancer cannot be cured... and he only has so long to live now....

Heh-heh, no not in the slightest. xxxHolic is about a high school kid (most anime is about high school kids) who can see ghosts. He finds himself working for a lanky, mysterious woman who collects magical objects. She has contacts with various paranormal realms and runs a business that helps people in need for a price. Things usually don't work out well for customers but that's due to their own failings. The show is a bit pessimistic but it also has a strong sense of humor so as not to bring everything down too much. The art style for the series is unique. Character designs are elongated like a painting by El Greco or high fashion design. In the original series, there isn't really a long story arc. Each episode is a tale unto its own from what I remember though there are reoccurring secondary characters and the relationships between the cast members evolves over its course.

Do you like Slice of Life animes by any chance?

Even though I'm not an avid fan of Slice of Life, there is one anime that I love. It's called Sket Dance. It's about a trio of high school students whose club, Sket Dan, have a mission to help other students with their problems. The problems varied from finding things, putting up a play, fighting crime, helping with romance (a lot), and more. Most of the students are involved in clubs, and the people who Sket Dan helped are pretty unique in their own way.

Overall, it's a comedy slice of life with a bit of drama and tragedy in some special episodes.

@takashichea: I'm totally new to anime, but I'll find out what you're talking about in time. ;-)

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
