Is this a zombie? Probably not… unless we're using the broadest definitions, maybe.
I feel like the main character would fit more accurately under some other classification of the undead in the Necronomicon, but I’m sure whatever it is just wouldn’t carry the same sort of sexy brand recognition as “zombie.” In this respect, IS THIS A ZOMBIE? might be the first anime I’ve ever encountered with a name chosen for the same “search engine optimization” concerns that generally decide - - *AHEM* - - the titles of web content. It’s as if the viewer’s being baited to watch just so they can say, “No! Nuh! That definitely isn’t a zombie!”
Actually, the whole plot seems like it’s been shaped by SEO, with subjects gathered from the latest top anime-related Google searches. There’s your aforementioned zombie, there’s your LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW-like magical girl, there’s your intentional T&A and then your cheeky fan service parody to ameliorate the titillation so it’s not sexist… and so on. In less business-y terms, this almost felt like watching a cute sketch put on by the yearbook staff of some anime high school for their annual talent show. They’re having a little fun reviewing the last year or so of anime - - and they probably do it every year under a different title.
Furthering the high school analogy... the material here isn’t especially inventive, but there’s such an earnest enthusiasm on display that you’re eager to just give everything an approving pass. I watched this dubbed, and there was an infectious sense of fun to the voice actors’ take on the show. If I watched this subbed, would I just be rolling my eyes over this being a hodgepodge rehash of so many things I’ve seen lately? Maybe so - - but I watched it sub, and I like it well enough, so I give a mild recommendation.
Watch this episode, "Yes, I'm a Magical Garment Girl" here and decide for yourself.
