Hayao Miyazaki is most acclaimed as the director of Studio Ghibli's finest films, like My Neighbor Totoro and the recent Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea. But Miyazaki does his own manga too, occasionally, and the latest is titled Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises). The first part was published last week, and Ghibli World has some scans and information.

The manga tells the tale of Dr. Jiro Horikoshi, who engineered many of Japan's WWII fighter jets (including, ahem, the Caproni Ca 39 Ghibli). But it may look a bit familiar to you for another reason: the characters are anthropomorphic pigs, not unlike the lead character of Miyazaki's 1992 film Porco Rosso.

Not exactly Strike Witches (thank god). I do wonder what the recent trend of WWII-related titles is about.
