I was wondering where I could buy anime visual novels that is localizated and translated to English.  I tried playasia to find these visual novels but I only see Clannad which required a specific console to run it.

Visual Novels are not as popular in this part of the world so it's very rare to see them being officially translated, what you can do is either learn Japanese and import them or find some illegal fan sub, which is just as hard as the first thing.

It's hard finding visual novels online, especially when it requires a specific system to run on. Learning japanese is the only thing easy or less complicated in regards to getting these visual novels.

I guess I need to go to Japan to find them.

Many fans have translated visual novels for free providing you import the japanese game. List of fan-translated ones are here There's a small number of visual novels released in the U.S. like Ai Yori Yoshi and Ever 17. There's also adult visual novel games at jlist and non-adult products at jbox. If you want to import Japanese games there's 2 options that are good one is- erogreshop, himeyashop and there are others but I don't have them bookmarked anymore since I reformatted.

There are a few titles in English (subtitled), but a lot of what is out there is older (10 years old, in some cases) and due to fan preferences, quite a bit of it is Porn.

Other, merely ecchi Visual Novels have been released, but Hirameki International -- the company that made most, maybe all of these -- went out of business last year.  The good news is that when you do find 'em, they're often on sale.

You won't find these in stores; online is pretty much your only option.

Right Stuf

J-list  (and I know the first link says HENTAI but jbox.com is the Clean, All-ages version of J-list)
(all titles, including adult) http://www.jlist.com/HENTAI/

There is also a direct-download retailer (no CD-Roms or DVDs in the mail, just a huge zip file) where I recently bought a localized version of Da Capo!  I thought I'd never see that.

I've tried Mangagamer in the past their english translation was terrible but maybe it's improved with Da Capo...

Palet Web is probably an even better import site and it's cheaper.
Another good one is DLsite that has an adult and non-adult section.

Dang it, Void Wizard beat me to all my usual places!.... lol.

But yeah, himeyashop, and paletweb are best for importing the original games, but if you can find them on playasia I highly recommend them. I've bought so many games from all three it's not funny, and I've even imported a few consoles from playasia, so they're definitely reliable.

I'm aware of a few visual novels like Phantom, an Ai Yori Aoshi dating sim and even Steins Gate getting releases here in the states. Otherwise as noted, the games aren't really as popular here in America as they would be in Japan.

EDIT: After having a look around, looks like Rightstuf has a small offering of visual novel games. However, most of them appear to be eroge games, one that notably stuck out for me being School Days. Wasn't even aware the game was licensed. The more you know! XD
