Another day, another buun!

Anime:

  • ANN has word of yet another new Astro Boy anime project in the works-- an 18-minute short set after the ending of the manga and released along with the debut album of new music unit ravex.

Manga:

  • If you follow the releases of comic and manga publisher Fanfare/Ponent Mon, you're probably already aware of mangaka Jiro Taniguchi, creator of acclaimed titles like Quest for the Missing Girl and Distant Neighborhood-- though going back a bit further, you might know his VIZ titles Benkei in New York and Hotel Harbour View. Why am I bringing it up? The Yomiuri reports that Taniguchi's home town, Tottori, has organized a commission to make a film version of his Chichi no Koyomi (Father's Calendar). Pretty cool, huh?
  • Kozueko Morimoto's manga Gokusen, now a popular drama, is also getting a movie for its finale.

Cons:

  • Good news for Anime Expo goers: pre-registration is now online! Make your plans soon, folks-- there aren't a ton of hotels in the immediate vicinity and they fill up fast.

Misc:

  • And finally, also from ANN: the Rough Guide series of guide books is trying its hand at the anime world, and manga at a later date.

Benkeii in New York and Hotel Harbor View are great!  Its right up there with Golgo 13 in seinen/gekiga classics.

I'm kinda excited for that anime reference book. I would get one just to prove to my anime-hating friends that there's so much more to anime then porn and kiddy crap.

Man I really wanna go to AX... I wanna roadtrip there but I don't think I have the money to have hotel reservations... *sighs* I'll figure out a way, I have family in SoCal so maybe I can try to stay with them or something.

Do you know if there are good parking garages near AX? If I do go end up going to SoCal and staying with family, I still would need to drive to the convention center itself.

There's parking garages and lots around the LA Convention center. The closet one which is on the same plot of land the LACC is... expensive... rates are $25 a day (at least back in 2008 - the rates could be jacked up this year). Yeouch. You're almost better off parking at a hotel parking lot and walking to LACC or taking one of the shuttles (closest hotel at this time is the Holiday Inn - but there isn't a shuttle service for them... I think).

I'm debating whether to go this year or not... since the guest list is Morning "Moe Moe Anime Edition of Dateline: To Catch a Predator with Chris Hansen" Musume and the gal that founded Yaoi Press. :/ Their pricing doesn't help either, eeek. They're not Comic Con for crying out loud!

I'm slightly weary of the new Astro Boy, but I'll check it out.

Also, really wish I could go to AX.

Holy crap that's expensive...
I thought you can't park in hotels unless you are a patron of that particular hotel. Isn't there a law where they can tow away the car since I'm not staying in that particular hotel?

@RedRoses: Yes... sadly it's summer time and a convention weekend - so all the parking lot prices are monopolized (... and anything at the LACC is NOT cheap. If you go pack lunches/dinners - because you'd rather spend $10 on a manga volume than a hamburger, just a hamburger... which is $11 if you wish to make it a cheeseburger).

Certain hotels have parking for hotel guests and parking for the heck of it. It varies really... you'd have to check hotels' sites. (I'm also trying to think of other parkings spots... but this is pretty much it sadly. :/)

Thanks for all the help SYLiENT! =) You've been very helpful for my planning of this (hopefully not bust) trip. This seems almost too cumbersome to try but we'll see haha

Not a problem - and if the trip is a bust try Comic-Con. There will be a bigger anime presence there - especially concerning the industry.
